Take typography one step further by having text falling from the sky in a burning inferno. Yes, this is the text-on-fire tutorial to end all tutorials. It uses a little Illustrator for the text and a lot of Photoshop to burn up the screen!
In previous tutorials you've seen two smoke effects that I've created, but let's face it, you can't have smoke without a fire somewhere. So in this tutorial, I will show you how to create a fire effect similar to when a spaceship or comet enters the earth's atmosphere. The image we'll be creating is inspired by a Nike Ad I saw some time ago. I'm not sure what the URL is. If anyone knows it, please link us up in the comments.
It's always a good idea to keep your eyes open for inspiration for effects and designs no matter what you are doing. Graphics are everywhere and you can learn a lot by looking at what other people do. Now on to the tutorial!
Step 1
First create a new document and fill it with a dark grey.

Step 2
Create a new layer, call it "Clouds," and using the Lasso Tool (L), make a selection similar to the one I've shown below.
Set your background color to a 50% grey and the foreground to a dark grey. Go to Filter > Render > Clouds and, holding the Alt key, create clouds. After that go to Images > Adjustments > Levels, and change the input levels and output levels until you make the clouds neither too dark nor too light (see the image shown).
This layer will be on top of the others.

Step 3
Create another layer and repeat Step 2, but this time just change the background color from 50% gray to a blue or green color. This will create a small cloud, lighter than the big one.

Step 4
Now we'll switch to Adobe Illustrator to create some text. I used Times New Roman for the font. After that go to Effect > 3D > Extrude and Bevel. Now we will create the 3D text. Rotate the object and change the perspective. You can use the same values as I did (shown below).

Step 5
- Copy the 3D text and paste it in Photoshop.
- Place it in the center and add some Noise (Filter > Noise > Add Noise).
- Now let's change the Layer Style. First add Bevel and Emboss.
- After that, let's add a Gradient Overlay.

Step 6
- Duplicate the Type layer and add a Motion Blur (Filter > Blur > Motion Blur).
- Set the angle of the blur to -53.
- Change the layer mode to Linear Dodge (Add).
- Create a Folder, call it "Typo," and move these two layers into it.

Step 7
Create a new layer and repeat the Step 2, this time using a selection as shown going out the back of the letter T. This will create the trailing smoke.

Step 8 Creating the FIRE
1 - Create a new layer and call it "fire1."
2 - With the Elliptical Marquee Tool (M), create a selection.
3 - Set the background color to light grey and the background to black.
4 - Create clouds as we did in Step 2.
5 - Change the Levels to increase the contrast;
6 - Change the Hue/Saturation with Colorize selected until you get an orange/yellow color.

Step 9
Create a new layer, call it "blazes," and repeat Step 8. After that, duplicate the layer and call it "flames." Create a folder and move the Fire1, Blazes, and Flames layers to this folder and call the whole folder "Fire." It will be on top of the Typo layer.

Step 10
Select the layer "blazes" and go to Filter > Liquefy. There select the Turbulence Tool (T). Now, on the edges of the fire, start creating some blazes. Use it like you would the smudge tool.

Set 11
After the Liquefy, go to Edit > Transform > Warp and change the blaze's form to something similar to the image below. After that apply Filter > Sharpen > Sharp.

Step 12
- Create a new layer and call it "yellow color."
- Create an ellipse selection with 30px feather and fill it with white.
- After that edit the Layer Style and apply a Color Overlay using an yellow color and Multiply for the layer's blend mode.

Step 13
The order and the Blend modes for the fire are:
- Flames: Lighter Color
- Blazes: Normal
- Fire1: Lighten
- Yellow Color: Multiply
Step 14 Sparks
For the sparks we will use brushes. Create a folder and call it "Sparks." It will be on top of the Fire folder.
- Inside the folder, add a new layer.
- Fill it with black and change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge.
- Select the Brush Tool and let's create a brush.
- In Brush Tip Shape, change the Diameter to 12, and increase the spacing.
- Select Scattering and set Scatter to the 1000% and Control to off. Change the Count to 2 and Count Jitter to 100%.
- Select white and start painting some sparks.

Step 15
Create a new layer and repeat the Step 14 but now change the Scatter Option to 0%. Start creating some single line sparks like swirls.

Step 16
Here I used the Gomedia Spraypaint brushes to create those tiny little sparks, but you can repeat the step 14 changing the Brush size only. Basically, create a new layer, put it behind the others, fill it with black, change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge, see the color to white, and create the sparks.

Conclusion
Click the image above to view a full screen version of the final image
.Although it looks complicated, the process is actually very straightforward. I used only three or four filters, brushes, and of course, the Layer Styles. It is a mix of two other tutorials I wrote: Creating Smoke and Magic Lighting Effect in Photoshop. One thing I have to say is that it’s impossible to create exactly the same fire twice, and that’s because the filter that renders the clouds does so randomly. As always, the idea is to play around with Photoshop to get your own unique results. Hope you enjoyed the tutorial!

My clouds appear with the sharp edge from the lasso tool. I’m using CS1, should that matter?
( )iva July 11th
mine too… I don’t know how to fix it
( )meso July 21st
yea yea it’s awesome looking but if you’re going to explain something please explain it right. or at least in more detail. your cloud making, makes no sense.
Le Jcart August 9th
I am guessing you have to use the feather option with the lasso in order for it to smooth out the edges. I put mine at roughly 40px and got the result i was looking for. Should solve your cloud problem.
Nico October 13th
well in the mac hold options while you render clouds

( )Anglictina November 27th
Thanx, this is cool tutorial
( )iWhy November 27th
Hi, its nice result but you have some mistakes tut…like you forgot note that after a lasso tool you use a Feather or what setting in filter you use. That”s little bit pity because finally the result may be different than yours.
( )Zenor November 27th
Awesome effect,congratulations (:
( )fuzz November 27th
you forgot to mention changing feather to something when using lasso
( )Bull3t November 27th
That looks awesome as usual, keep up the amazing work!
( )Carsten November 27th
Great Effect, but I’m not capable of recreating this effect with your description.
Somehow you forgot to mention that you use some smooth selection insted of a normal one.
And: I don’t understand how Step 8 works. Could you (or somebody else) please describe it a little bit more detailed? That would be nice.
( )Arik November 27th
Typo:
Step 8
2 – Set the background color to light grey and the background to black;
One of those should be foreground, right?
( )Fabio "Zee" November 27th
@Arik, you are right, my mistake. Sorry about that.
( )porkster September 9th
Where can I get the PSD file? The tutorial doesn’t quite cover the steps to get the final result…
( )Colin Stein November 27th
can’t exactly get my fire to look as nice as yours…..but hey! i love it! i’m sure i’ll figure it out soon enough
( )PhotoGraphics November 27th
Really nice work.
( )PhotoGraphics November 27th
Really nice work.
I will soon start adding some tutorials. Need to get some things together and finish some work (freelancing)
and I will start posting.
Thank you Collis for this great idea.
( )Jim November 27th
Wow, that is extremely interesting. I will definitely use this ASAP.
( )Chad November 27th
Something with the lasso selection is messed up. What were your refine edge settings? Also in the text part in illy you have the perspective being 131 in the screen shot but it is 160 in the actual effect. Also when you make the clouds for the fire on the letter O are we supposed to switch back to what and black color? (Shift+D)? I tried doing it seems like it missing a few steps or something. However, nice tut.
( )Don November 27th
now THAT is tight.
awesomeness.
( )Lance November 27th
This is exactly what seperates this site from the rest. Never mind “scanlines” or “glossy Web 2.0 button” tutorials, this is what people should be learning, and teaching.
Congrats on such a brilliant tut!
Peace, Lance

( )Sebastian E. November 27th
@ Collis
Unfortunately, there’s no way to write an email to you. I wanted to know whether you received my tutorial:
“How to carve a heart into a wood texture”
result: http://img507.imageshack.us/my.php?image=woodrf7.jpg
(I had some problems uploading my tutorial)
( )watanabe November 28th
awesome effect. can’t say the same for the tut though. Not too noob-friendly, especially for someone like me. I wish the tut was a bit more detailed, like how the lasso + cloud effect was created. Mine has sharp edges while the one here looks like real smoke. Please make it a spoonfed tut.
( )Nehemiah November 28th
So THAT’S how you make fire!
( )b00m November 28th
awesome
( )watanabe November 28th
this tut is really frustrating. some steps were left out.
( )user748 November 28th
1) you can’t HOLD ALT while using the Filter menu.
2) when you create the clouds using the lasso tool you get hard edges
3) your work is gorgeous
( )Stefano November 28th
Ok, i read the tutorial and was really impressed.. a really great piece of photoshop art.
Then i tried it step by step and there are 2 possible solutions:
1. I am stupid.
Kinda possible, but let’s say i am not.
2. The steps are poorly documented.
I’d really like to know if someone came up with a fire like yours.. (not the same obviously, but looking like).
I really appreciate this site cause it has some of the best tuts ever. This one was going to be my fav, but it is definitely one of the worst.
( )Mark November 28th
Wow this is so nice- This maybe helpful and useful. great job..
( )Yvie November 28th
Instead of using the lasso tool, I created a seperate layer. With the brush tool on Airbrush, I “drew” the shape that he suggested we “lasso.” On a seperate layer, I Selected the airbrushed layer (Ctrl+that layer) and used that to render my clouds on the clouds layer. This gave me the effect that he got.
( )Mark Abucayon November 28th
U know what this is a nice one two thumbs up for you fabio… share us more tutorials, u help more people here. Thanks
( )Zeb November 28th
I like this site !
( )fenixo November 28th
compliments! it’s fantastic!
( )thx
Deftone82 November 28th
Very nice Tut….BUT
I can’t get it like even close looking like yours.
1. The clouds are just plain ugly (even with a feather of 50 pix)
2. The 3D bevel&extrude in Illustrator doesn’t come close to your “typo” (with exactly the same inputs as shown above in step 4)
3. My fire looks like a yellow blob…
please please please could someone clarify some steps cuz this is very nice material!
As is that polish designer…anyone who wonna write a tut from his design! Top notch work
thank you and greetings from Belgium, the land of witloof, bier and fritten.
( )Endrit November 29th
at second step when creates clouds holding alt nobody can create clouds like that just with filter render and clouds . needs some other effect.i have tried 3 times but i have other results(i dont now too much english)
( )moosa November 29th
This is an excellent tutorial. Very nice.
( )thnks for shared !
Scar November 29th
Hi!
( )alex November 29th
step 8 in general is hard to follow.
( )for step 8 what blending did you make it?
Eva Bell November 29th
This is an awesome tutorial. I changed the text to Loraelyn and it worked very well. I also re-learned how to create a brush. Thank you so.

( )kienes November 30th
just one simple question – why can’t i see the images, what might be the reasons??? thx for answers. i have the problem since the update…
( )anyway nice stuff even if i cant see the images …
Ruven November 30th
actually nice site… and nice tuts. but this one isnt explained very well… some steps are not comprehensible (clouds, fireball…). I think it also depends on ur PS version… really nice effect, but the tutorial could be a lot better…
( )max flood November 30th
you missed quite a few steps out of how you created that, but thank you for trying.
( )Chris November 30th
Wow great tutorial I cant for the life of me make the fire that convincing but ill keep trying.
( )MisterBremer November 30th
I have learned much from this site, and consider myself decent with most minor things in Photoshop–however–I know very little about Illustrator, and being used to photoshop makes it totally foreign to me. Are there any good websites for Illustrator that are as comprehensive and descriptive as this one? Or good books?
It is a very counter intuitive program to me after learning photoshop, so I’d like to find tips to get better at it.
( )Zaigham November 30th
Man, I love this site! its PSD Goldmine! lol
( )Jeff Finley November 30th
awesome!! 1
( )bob November 30th
amazingeffect
( )SirJuish November 30th
Tutorial looks great but is easier said than followed. Something is up with Step #2. As others have mentioned, your cloud border is feathered but i get a solid line of rendered clouds vs. the soft feathered look you accomplished. I’m on CS3 and can’t seem to find the right combination.
I’ll attempt to re-produce using a gaussian blur and some finagling.
Thanks for taking the time to write this up though.
PS – I think $2.50 is a little expensive as well. $1 is pushing it but is within the estimated perceived value for a PSD file that your just going to copy layer styles from.
Can’t i just buy you a cup of Coffee like last time?
( )SirJuish November 30th
Edit: Found the ‘feather’ settings for the selection tool. (it’s on the toolbar in CS3).
Can you post what feather px you used for this effect?
Thanks.
( )Chris November 30th
After a lot of trying I think I finally figured out how to do the fire.
EXCELLENT TUT THANKS SO MUCH.
http://www.globalstudio.com/samples/firetest.jpg
( )Fabio "zee" November 30th
@Chris: your image is really cool, congratulations…
( )Chris November 30th
Ah thanks man I had to take a lot of liberties with the tutorial but I think I kind of figured it out.
( )Kevin H December 1st
Nice…and good call showing the rulers in your screen shots.
( )Alex December 1st
Verrrry nice tutorial, love the outcome, I’m seriously getting to love this site!
( )Andrew December 1st
I’m going to have to agree with lots of other people your gonna want to mention that you have to feather the selection of the clouds otherwise awesome tutorial!
( )Nathan December 1st
Ok, So there are a lot a people trying to figure out how to get the clouds to look the same as in the tut.
If you use the pen tool to draw out your shapes instead of the lasso tool you will have some more control over what you can draw. After you draw your shapes you right click or control click for mac and a box comes up…you chose “make selection” then it will ask you how much you want to feather. You can’t go any higher than 250 px but the most you should need is 150 px anywhere between 100-130 px will work great.
Now the marching ants appear. Now run your filter-render-clouds. Don’t worry about holding the alt key down for this. Your rendered clouds should look way better, but there is still some touch ups that need to be done. The touch ups are a combination of or one of the following…brightness & contrast, levels, and curves. Each one gives you a little more control over what you are trying to do. These can all be found under Image-Adjustments.
Now just play around with your curves or whatever you want to use, I recommend curves it is a bit more complex esp. if you are new to PS. Either way you should see some fantastic clouds appear once you figure out the control.
A side note…if you are using a version of PS other than CS3 I will caution you when using the brightness & contrast adjustment. The CS3 controls for it are much better than in older versions. Older versions can blow out your image a lot easier.
Sorry for this being so long. I hope this is helpful to the ones that are looking for answers. Let me know.
( )Navras December 2nd
It’s really AMAZING!!!! ++++++++
( )zerofreeze December 2nd
I dont have illustratior to make that kind of text can i do it with photoshop

( )Junior December 3rd
In step eight when I do it it doesnt come out like the fire in the O its just a orange circle… I think you skipped some steps?
( )Thomas December 3rd
Im a newbie and am totally going to get onto this.!!! I love this website!
( )Junior December 4th
Someone that has done this please explain step 8 also tell me if you used mac photoshop like he did because im thinking only his photoshop will have that effect
( )KIKE PECH December 4th

i guess i dont know
( )Oscar December 4th
I’d really appreciate it if someone would be able to explain step 8 in a more detailed way. The tutorial is fantastic and up to that point I can do everything fine, but the fire has been impossible so far.
( )god056 December 4th
i tried it, without really following the steps. i tried to apply the basic things i caught in here. i am using ps6 and 7 only on windows.
i don’t find it awesome, but i’m getting there

escanive December 5th
Wow, impressive tutorial. I love it!
( )Shana December 7th
A good tutorial but like the others, there seems to be a reliance on Illustrator. I hope this is not the start of a new trend. It would be nice to see tutorials that don’t require illustrator. Thanks
( )skut December 7th
newbie stuck on lasso step -.- anyone can help me for detail ?
Thanks
( )Jash Sayani December 8th
This is the best tutorial ever! Thanks for putting it up.
( )Liam turner December 10th
I see some of you have problems with the hard edge of the lasso too… I decided, from the beginning of giving this a try, that it would be so much easier to just use quick masks. That is, those two buttons third from the bottom of your toolbox (Cs2). Just use a soft brush once you’re in quick mask mode, and mark the selections. Then click the button to get out of quick mode, right click in the image and select inverse selection. Then you can filter>render>clouds, and the cloud edges will be soft. Problem solved.
In Illustrator, I found that to get the text right, you need to use the “More Options” button in the Bevel window. Then play around with the lighting, both the intensity and angle.
( )Matt December 11th
Hey, i attempted this Tut because it looks absolutely amazing! I was discouraged though on the smoke, the lasso tool doesnt seem to be the right tool for the job because even with heavy feathering, the clouds have a sharp edge and they dont seem to sift or blend as they do in your image. If you can update it with a little more detailed instructions as to how you came about those smoke effects i think we would all appreciate it!
Great Effect!
( )african December 11th
koooooooooooooool
( )NixonLima December 12th
!!Wow!! its wonderfull. You are a master. congratulations.
( )Kill3r December 12th
A very nice finished result but the tutorial is very badly written, you seem to skip very important steps. I had to go thru it again doing what i thought would be best before it ended up like your end result.
( )chad December 12th
Do as explained above with the pen tool. Works better than the lasso, I tried the lasso because the tut said to but seems in accurate.
( )Taylor December 12th
Great Techniques.
As always, thanks for the great info!
( )KIKE PECH December 13th

It’s impossible create clouds holding ALT key….
( )shamsul December 18th
wow…….awesome outcome man……that is just wicked…….
( )Shane December 18th
That is absolutely fantastic stuff!
Thanks for the tutorial!
( )fixstern December 20th
Great Tutorial.
( )But Step 2 it disn’t work for me.
Clouds are always with sharp edges (selection, Alt-Key). Not that smooth like on the picture above.
Some idea what i make wrong.
piko December 20th
man……..its awesome………..i tried to do something like this using pen tools….& it was pain in da neck………….gooood job!!!!!!!!
( )Ruud December 21st
It’s a nice tutorial, but please remove step 12, it makes the fire look like crap. Looks way better without it. Anyway, good read!
( )Jay December 22nd
Amazing result but your explanation isnt very good at all. The gradients i recreated down to a tee
werent that at all. Would be nice if you gave dimensions as blending option properties vary depending on scale.
Thanks though
( )Anders December 23rd
Nice tutorial, And for people saying alt cant be used with filters.. hold down alt before you enter the filter menu.
Here’s a little try i made, nothing fancy. Had a meteor instead of the text.
http://hem.bredband.net/nazul/meteor.jpg
to bad web browsers doesn’t support Adobe RGB. Looks washed out in a browser.
( )Valerio December 23rd
Respect!!!!!!
( )Gugun 7 December 29th
Thanks for the tutorial!
( )tanner December 29th
i still cant figure out what to fix on step 8 i can do everything else…any help?
( )Renato December 30th
is the gob job my respect !!!!
( )Kronos85 January 1st
Awesome effect and thanks for sharing BUT it’s a pain to follow the tut because you do not give any details such as the way you made the clouds, I had the same problem with it.
I couldn’t manage to have the same effect as you on the fire elements. You should give more explanations and more détails.
And by the way, the tut sens to bemissing some steps…
( )nukee07 January 1st
ooooooooo……i have see GODof hand of design on my Lord
( )prY January 3rd
Very nice tutorial but i cant get the 3d text in Illustrator how he did can you or someone else explain how to get that done in illustrator maybe the color of the text and the other options.

Nice effect
( )Ben January 4th
I agree with everyone’s enthusiasm when I say WOW. However, I also picked up on those missing details that a few others have mentioned. I’d consider myself very proficient in Photoshop and it was difficult filling in the gaps.
In Illustrator your screenshot did not show any of the ‘more options’ settings which MUST have been set to get the extruded text you used. Also the little things like the original dimension of your graphic also affect how the clouds filter renders. Small dimensions don’t get the kind of variation and detail necessary to resemble the fire in step 8. I’d recommend working on a big canvas for everyone having trouble with those steps.
I love this site and all the authors that contribute to it, much appreciation for all the hard work. I tell every designer I know about this great resource!
( )Marcio Lucena January 5th
Amazing site and this tutorial is perfect!
( )jak_in_the_box January 7th
hi very nice text effect overall i managed to get upto the part where i manipulate the last letter in the word which i am using, my last word being Y and i can not manipulate it correctly to get the desired effect i.e. the same as your effect it would be much better to be more thorough in explaining as from all the post above MANY people are having trouble understanding and following it. i decided to carry on anyway and then cudnt get step 12 to work as u said even though i followed the tutorial down to the word. i have been trying now for nearly 5 hours and have given up as i see no good quality version being reproduced by me. please could you assist me i would be most grateful…
a great effect just a pit i cant put it into practice and make use of the tutorial
( )graffiksguru January 8th
Nice work on the tutorial, first time to the site, stumbled on it, gotta say I’m impressed! Keep up the sweet work..
( )graffiksguru January 8th
Couple things to add, that might help the noobs, what resolution and size document you started with
( )(I set it at 300 at first, but it looks like you went more 72).
Also, you forget to mention you feathered the clouds so you don’t get the rough edge, so I upped my feather to 50px, (don’t know why you say hold alt). still going through the rest, but I still love it.
Chip January 11th
This is great. You can see the rawn power of Photoshop. I have some plugins which help me “3D-ize” the text, so no need for Illustrator or 3DSMax.
Imagine a space scene, with some planets and meteors. Damn, I think I’ll try a nice composition design using this tutorial as a starting point. It really gives me some ideas
( )crazyleaf January 13th
Superb tutorial, as usual.
( )jiri January 17th
From step 6, I encountered some problems, I have a french photoshop version and I didn’t find the comparability for filter and fusion mode
( )- step 11 Filter > Sharpen > Sharp.?
- step 6 Linear Dodge
- step 14 color dodge
I all tryed , but its not same to this tuto.
Peter Schmalfeldt January 20th
For those with the sharp Lasso edges, you will need to set your feathering to something round 15px or higher. Adjust to your taste.
( )rudie January 25th

It’s to hard for me to do!
( )Laura February 20th
Amazing! Fantastic! Great effect!
( )kyle February 22nd
There are some large gaps, however, patience will prevail. I’m using CS2 for both PS and ILL and everything works just fine. He gives enough detail for the 3d text to be useful. I think this tut writer leaves a lot of room for personal preference. I’m still working on the dust and particles….However, patience paid off for me for the fire…it looks amazing….
( )web design cheltenham February 29th
one word WOW – this is truely amazing and worth the effort if u struggled with this one just keep going cause the end effefts are amazing. i salute thee

Hi
I’m trying to copy this, but I’m already stuck at Step 2.
Im using CS3 on a Vista laptop. When i’ve got the area selected with the Lasso Tool, and then trying to put clouds in it, it is totally screwed. By pressing ALT, I dont have a clue when, or whatsoever, because by pressing ALT it closes the menu so I can’t click on clouds.. :S
Someone any ideas? Because It looks very ver nice, and i really want to know this!
( )thanks in advance!
HAN March 8th
Ok, solved the problem with the clouds at step 2
( )but how can I make a proper fire? Cause I’m missing some information:

In case anyone still can’t get past step 2 in cs3 use refine selection, increase feather before applying cloud rendering
( )ZaFaR June 10th
This is an awesome tutorial. I changed the text to Loraelyn and it worked very well. I also re-learned how to create a brush. Thank you so.

Awesome Tut, this is a very useful tut, thanks
( )g June 16th
Looking at the PSD for this tutorial… there are a few steps missing…
So i guess if you want to get a better idea of how this is done, you’ll have to get a plus account. You will need to figure out some of the stuff on your own.
Great effect though.
( )FrankCrank June 16th
^ I agree with ‘g’ on this, I can’t recreate the whole thing too.
But otherwise a very kool effect indeed.
( )Fabio! your tuts and your site OWNS man.
carry-on the good work

Ever since I started coming to this site I’ve wanted to do this tutorial… and I still haven’t done it. What a shame. Next on my to-do list.
( )Leejin July 9th
This is hardly a tutorial though.
It is impressive, but only for seasoned users. Hehe.
I can’t for the life of me get my clouds to blend in.
And my liquify tool makes the fire look like it has spikes, not that is a flame…
Ah well, practice, practice….
( )Rob July 9th
Leejin, scroll up a bit and you’ll see Nathan explained how to get the clouds. Me, I used the pen tool to get the shapes, then I made it into a selection. After, I went to select – modify – feather. Here I inputed 30. You can go higher. Now go ahead to render – clouds, and you should have something closer to what’s here. Hope that helped a bit
( )Glen July 11th
Interesting tutorial.
( )Bloodyhippo July 11th
Very nice tutorial!
( )Getting just the right looking thing with clouds is a bit hard for me, but I managed somehow…See what I did!
A few touches of mine too…

Juva July 12th
thanks.it’s great
( )Corey July 14th
tbh i dont think you left enough information for people, like help them find brushes instead of buying them, how did you make the lasso not have jagged edges, how to make it so the color cloud isnt so bright,. just stuff like that but the outcome is nice
( )Gunnar July 18th
Okay so in step 2 I had the sharps edges problem too. Then I airbrushed the shape I wanted then created a clipping mask and then render>cloud the mask.
Hope it works for you guys
( )Gunnar July 18th
Okay one more thing. I am completely stumped on the eighth step!!! Can anyone explain it a little differently? Please!
( )Justin July 19th
Horribly written tutorial.
Its a nice effect but you cant echieve it by following the tutorial.

( )Daniel October 10th
Hey,
For all you guys confused about the first cloud rendering part
1.) When you select the Lasso tool, look under your toolbar at the Feather setting. I used 50, and once you render and do the Levels to it, the image looks fine.
2.) For the blue part, I just made a new layer and did the same thing with a blue background color when I rendered the clouds. Then you can put the blue layer on Color Dodge and It looks just fine.
Happy Photoshopping,
( )Daniel

( )theholysfriend October 27th
pretty cool effect, but the tutorial needs a re-work.
( )it’s very hard to guess what step might be the next, also a rgb info for the grey colours could improve the editing.
would be nice to see a re-work from the author himself or any other user…
Pooch October 30th
I like the effect a LOT, but tbh, the tut is lacking.
The part that i am stuck on is 8. What blending modes are you setting the layers on?
for more attention:
STEP 8: WHAT BLENDING MODE????????
Cuz i can’t seem to get that look… I’ve tried to do this like, 50 times in the past two days and can’t get it >_>

Amazing! I want to try this, but I get stuck in the begining. When I apply the cloud trick to my selection, this is lined hard until the end of my selection shape. It doesn’t fade. Can you tell me how I can fix this, or how I should generate clouds that fade on the edges of my selection? Big tnx!
A learner from NL
( )Jon Bon Jovie December 31st
Jeroen – when you select the lasoo tool, at the top, on the toolbar, set the feather value to around 30-40 and then draw the shape.
( )eip January 15th
Awesome tutorials on this site ..One question on this. You say to hold alt when creating the clouds but that just closes my menu? I am on windows not mac
( )Caleb January 16th
I don’t know how to use Illustrator very well and I put those numbers in my text is in the right shape, but the shading is wrong. Help please.

This would be a great tutorial if there were not so many missing bits of information.
Any chance a rewrite is possible or already done?
( )Very lovely effect….but this tut is way too hard to follow unless you are someone who already knows how its to be done.

( )girl February 5th
This stinks, I did exactly what you said and ALOT didn’t turn out the way it did for you… couldn’t even get it to work. waste of time…
( )Shawn February 5th
After some playing around. I found the step missed for the cloud effect.
While your have your selection and before you put in your clouds. Go to
Select > Refine Edge.
I used these settings to get his result before using his Adjustment Levels.
Refine Edge:
Radius – 66.8
Contrast – 7
Smooth – 0
Feather – 6.5
Contract/Expand – +39
Hopefully this helps
( )Shawn February 5th
Update: Sorry, change your feather to somewhere in the 40’s
( )Splortched123@hotmail.com February 9th
This is pathetic.
This guy obviously didn’t write this tutorial correctly so that you’d HAVE to buy the PSD.
That’s just sad, because the effect looks really cool.
Unfortunately there is absolutely no way to get that look using this tutorial!
Look for some other tutorial, cause this one is BOGUS!
( )Ashley February 10th
I did your tutorial and I pretty much wanted to gauge my eyes out. You did not explain your steps well at all, and I think you should actually do your own tutorial from the steps you gave and see what I mean. I have a lot of experience with photoshop so I know what I’m talking about when I say this sucks horribly. To anyone else, good luck adding your own feathers/colors/ideas to this, because the directions this person gave are BAD.
( )And the sad part is, my photoshop crashed so I have to go back and start again because it’s for a class assignment. Thanks for making my life miserable. Bye.
chris February 13th
Great tutrial but ive run into some problems in step 2 (alt key) and the lvls arent the same
( )MirazTutorials February 15th
Im sure with a slight carefull study of the end image the effect can be re-created. In light the tutorial does not give the entire cake i must admit
( )kamtui February 19th
not discussed well….. you should discuss it detail by detail so that others can do it..
( )Adam February 20th
This tutorial doesn’t make sense — very hard to follow even for an experienced user of photoshop. I suggest that you complete your tutorials before posting them otherwise they are a waste of time.
Nice effort however.
( )writersbloc February 20th
I’m a big fan of your more recent tutorials Fabio, but this early stuff really leaves a lot to be desired. Everything pretty much falls apart by Step 11- tell me how you can have a round fire ball and suddenly manage to make the “O” look like molten steal with fire erupting off the front edge with just liquify and sharpen? remember there, are two other layers of fireballs above and below this layer, but you’ve skipped a ton of direction.
( )gops February 23rd

Can someone please tell us wich is the effect used in te step 8? I can’t get it TT
( )naby February 25th

( )a total pissed Phil March 5th
to be honest, it really pisses me off, that you post this as top tut and then are not good enough to answer the questions of your guests. this goes out to collis AND the author of this tut. instead that someone of these “wow youre so cool”-dudes explains what is going on and what the steps were, which were not described, they continue patting each otthers shoulder.
THIS IS NOT ONE OF THE BEST TUTS I’VE SEEN, THIS IS ONE OF THE WORST!
( )Jehzeel Laurente March 6th

( )MKXii May 5th
Ok so for step 8 I just created the circle with the elliptical marquee tool and set the feather to 60 pixels. I then used relatively the same stats he used for his levels and the exact same stats for the Hue/Sat.
But for the sparks layer I used a soft brush and erased some of the inside of the circle. I pretty much got the same effect.
( )Adi May 9th
Hello everyone,
Fabio, I m a die heart fan of yours. In this tutorial I m very confused about the STEP 2. I think some more explanation should be given. Read the STEP 2 again, I think u forgot to mention some instructions.
STEP 2:
Go to Filter > Render > Clouds and, holding the Alt key, create clouds.
When u Go to Filter > Render > Clouds then holding the “Alt key” do nothing.
Anyways, I appreciate for your efforts. Keep the good stuff up!
( )Adi May 9th

Good job, but man!,
( )What are the blending modes of the layers
because starting from the cluds .. (that I supposed its necesary to use a great feather in the selection) nothing looks like yours
James June 12th
I dont get the clouds part.
( )James June 12th
I dont get how to do clouds, it always just fills the entire selection auto
( )James June 12th
is this meant for photoshop cs4? cause thats what i have, and its registered
( )kamal June 17th
magnifico, awsome, beautiful….
( )Dave June 26th
It silly to add an incomplete tutorial!
With the clouds you need to adjust the feather option in the bar at the top which appears when you select the lasoo tool (a number between 20 – 40 is good) just play around untill your clouds don’t have hard edges.
With the text in illustrator to get the same effect, click the more options tab in the 3D bevel options box and play with the light settings untill you get the same thing. (note: do not give your text an outline just a fill color before adding the 3d effects)
( )Dave June 26th
Also to get the bent effect on the text, render each letter induvidually in 3D bevel and emboss. Positioning it how it looks above the group the objects before copying.
( )Dave June 26th
Also do not hold the “alt” key when adding clouds. Just click render clouds!
( )Brian June 28th
Ya my fire turned out horrible. I would love to know the subtle things that make this tutorial come together because it is definitely missing a few steps.

nice finished product, but terrible tutorial. all I get after step 8 is a ball of orange and yellow light, where as the preview image shows it all nicely blended around the “O”. i don’t get it?
( )coop July 31st
to get it blended around the ‘O’ just warp the individual fire effects around it
though still my fire doesnt glow as much :/
( )Faith July 19th
Wow … Very Great Tutorial.
( )Thnk’s guys, I will Learn it at home..
Benjoseph July 22nd
great fire effect, but I have to agree with some of the other comments that the lasso tool doesn’t create the same soft edged clouds shown in your example, but none-the-less you still showed me how to create a cool meteor fire.. Thanks and keep them coming… For you people still stuck on the clouds.. just download a cloud brush or soften the edges of your selection to create your clouds. The tutorial was about fire not clouds..
( )Marcos July 30th
I cannot understand…why to publish a tutorial that does not work. Wrong step 2 & step 8. Only to fulfill CV?
( )Nicklas Gustafsson August 1st
I enjoyed this tutorial, not very nubberish-friendly though.
To complete it you have to play around some with the layer style options.
Also be patient when using adjustments like layers and hue/sat, it is important to get some areas of the clouds black (inc the contrast).

The effect is pretty cool…but I’m sorry I cannot say the same for your tutorial. The steps are not been explained properly and is very confusing.

Here is another way to make clouds better. open a new layer (ctrl+shift+N) then go to filter>render>clouds (you can do it till you get the best result for you) then here is the difference. Go to Selecet>Color Range… Then play with the Fuzziness (I found the best result on 88) after that. Select Inverse (ctrl+shift+I or Select>Inverse) so just hit delete till you get the best result. (Do not hit too much 3 or 4 times will be enough). Now we will make some beauty touches
with Clone Stamp Tool (S) copy the best parts to the edges to make it more realistic and clear the unwanted ones with eraser tool (E). Here is my result about making of cloud part of the tutorial: http://img200.imageshack.us/i/tutef.jpg/
