“If you want to take your typography skills to the next level…”

What a joke! What you show us here is the total absence of typography skills.

The capital T is associated with the first line by any convention, so you are automatically trying to figure out what the f*** “Tno” means.

The letter-spacing, word-spacing and line-spacing is totally inconsistent.

The o of “No” stands closer to the M than the following o, so your eye visually grabs “NoM” as some kind of abbreviation or anagram. Furthermore this mysterious “NoM” is viciously attacked by the total caps “URN” from Turning creeping up from below.

Obviously, the concept of optical alignment is unknown to the author as well. How else can one get the idea to align the stems of the T and The B vertically? (The T-stem having a lot more weight, giving the whole setup a feeling of being imbalanced)

And the poor K with the G on top reminds me of Atlas trying to carry the world on his shoulders. (Really, it looks like the K tries to hold the giant G with one hand, slowly going down under the weight. The drops are really the finishing touch – it looks as if our K-man is sweating like hell under the tremendous weight.) Very funny!

And then all this curly stuff! Trajan is a font with a history of millenniums giving the impression of stable solid roman temples. You are just killing those strong lines.

What have you done to this type?

It might be a nice tut on how on to do swirls. Typography it is not!

I’m going to have to agree with flyingfox, though I still LOVE the technique. I am no expert in typography, but what he says makes sense and seems to follow within the guild lines of what I AM learning about Typography. As a designer I want to have as much freedom as possible. I want my designs to look amazing and convey emotion etc. But I think if we start teaching each other bad habits, ultimately this isn’t going to assist us but hinder us.

That being said, the final look is really cool.

    • dan says:

your so right i actually sat here and read everything you typed lol, poor premium members i feel bad for them , wasted their money!

    • Random says:

      Well Said!

    • jc says:

I agree with everything you said, looks like the author just clicked the ‘justify’ option in photoshop and just left it at that. With that said, I never come to this site to learn about any design or typography theories. You can look through all the tutorials on this site and can tell that most tutorials are not very strong in terms of understanding space/form/type/negative space. I come to this site to learn about photoshop techniques (hence the site’s name). If people are here to learn to how to understand type/design/design history, they should look else where.

And with all that said, the type effects look pretty good

      • flyingfox says:

Coming to this site just for photoshop techniques is like watching porn just for anatomy, don’t you think? ;)

Never mind, i understand your point. But i would like to get what’s on the label.

    • geir benny nystad says:

i agree, had some problems reading this, but i did after seconds, but you should not try to guess what is say. the message should be clear right away and not trying to figure what letter goes where. But it looks sweet and that is good, we as the designers just have to do it our way to make it look right!

    • GORDE says:

      agreed!
      that’s a bit of… abusing the font…
nice tut for the effects but not for typography.

  7. PSDDude says:

I like this text effect very much !

  8. everytuesday says:

definitely different..and I like it..would love to see more creative type tutorials! thanks for this!

  9. lawrence77 says:

Wojciech Pijecki is always awesome :)

    thanks man :)

  10. Coin says:

    flyingfox

What have you been smoking lately? I admire your level imagination!
“Really, it looks like the K tries to hold the giant G with one hand”
    made my day ;D

Wojciech, I wish I had premium acc.

  11. Nick says:

I have to agree with flyingfox on this one. This is bad typography. It’s a nice little text effect and some cool swirls, but the basic rules of typography are lost in this one. Definitely wouldn’t pay for a premium membership for this. I read “TNoMore T urning BACK”. Photoshop skills = pretty nice. Typography skills = eww.

  12. Dave says:

I like the look of the swirls and stuff, but as flyingfox points out, it is quite difficult to read/understand at first glance. That giant T definitely gives the impression of starting of the phrase, but it isn’t supposed to (or at least I don’t think it is).

As a typography piece, it has some great looks and concepts for the letter decorations, but it isn’t organized well / the layout is quite confusing and inconsistent… but fix those problems and this would be incredible!

  13. ME says:

premium… PREMIUM?! NOO!! WHAT THE FU** ?

This won’t make me become like “oh, I so want to see this tutorial, let’s buy premium”. No ! IT will just make me pissed of and never EVER again return to this paga again… ._.

MAKE THIS NONPREMIUM AND LET ME LEARN !

  14. flyingfox says:

Just to back my arguments up. This image is not pixel perfect, i laid it out in just a couple of minutes. But it already is way more balanced than the typo in this tut.

    No more turning back

    • Spockdrdre says:

Definitely agreed, flyingfox. The author should take into considering the cultural traditions for reading for the targeted audience, as well as legibility. Not only do you automatically think that the type says “Tno More Urning Back,” but there’s also an unnecessary emphasized consonant where it attempts to convey a meaning that isnt there. Keeping the T closer to the point size of the “urning” would help bring a sense of balance and calm statement to the piece, rather than feeling rushed, unprofessional, and as if someone has no control over their tone.

    • spiderm0nkey says:

I much prefer your layout because it looks much more logical in regards to the placement of words/letters.

  15. Mike Viking says:

    Dreadful.

    It looks terrible

  16. going to have to agree with flyingfox, though I still LOVE the technique. See Mys comen

  17. Anciant says:

Great, love the effect! You guys are being to harsh on the rules of typography. It’s just a guide and a good idea to follow.

  18. tom says:

The effect is cool and all but that Photoshop standard-shape underneath the A somewhat kills it for me.

  19. drtortoise says:

Hi, I’m a plus member and pay 22 quarterly, why can’t I see this tutorial?

  20. drtortoise says:

To clarify, I am able to download the source files, but not able to see the tutorial, what’s going on?

  21. mrxempz says:

is that ah chrome filter and set the foreground to green???

  22. David says:

    Awful, it’s just wrong!

  23. U.K says:

    Whoa people.

Although I do agree with what everyone is saying bout the placement of letters and whatnot, a little respect. If you paid the money for premium and are disappointed, oh well……… (shrugging) cancel it.
Perhaps it was his first shot at typography of this sort! I know I have tried and it ain’t easy trying to get EVERYONE to see the SAME thing. Many said that they did benefit from the techniques used and loved the overall outcome but everyone is heated over the placement of letters…is it really worth all that drama? gosh…

  24. aMs says:

flyingfox, in this case you should teach this guy also: http://vector.tutsplus.com/articles/case-study/ace-hotel-wall-murals/

    Looks like you’re the specialist!

  25. supra shoes says:
