Quick Tip: Create a Crisp Metallic Text Effect in Photoshop

Final Product What You'll Be Creating

In this quick tip tutorial, we will explain how to create a crisp, metallic text effect using just a couple of layer styles in Photoshop. Let’s get started!

Tutorial Assets

The following assets were used during the production of this tutorial.

Step 1

Before opening Photoshop, install the font Rothenburg Decorative and these grunge brushes.
Open Photoshop and Create a New Document, 1800 x 1300 pixels in RGB mode, 72 DPI and finally then Fill the background with this dark grey color #1f1f1f.

Step 2

Create a New Layer, name it ‘texture’ and using these Grunge Brushes click a couple of times in the center of the document using a white color. Use different brushes, try to cover the center of the document, varying the textures.

Step 3

Double-click on the thumbnail of the Layer ‘texture’ to open the Layer Style panel. Into the ‘Blending Options’
Reduce the ‘Fill’ to 0, then apply a ‘Drop Shadow’ and an ‘Inner Shadow’ using these settings. This will give the texture a realistic embossed look.

Step 4

Click on the ‘Add Layer Mask’ icon, then click Command/Ctrl + (I) to invert it.
Pick a big soft Brush (hardness: 0% – size: 950px) and click in the center of the document. This way the ‘texture’ Layer will be shown only in the center, fading on the edges of the document.

Step 5

Using the ‘Type Tool’ (T) and these settings, type the word ‘Othello’ or whatever you want. If you can’t see the ‘Character Window" go to Window > Character.

Step 6

Open the ‘Layer Style’ of the ‘Othello’ Text Layer and apply these settings. Below each step you can find a preview for the effect just added.

Step 7

Once you’ve modified the Style, click Ok. Now select the word ‘Othello’, using the Type Tool (T). Select everything beside the first capital letter and reduce the kerning to -5 as in the image below. You can find the Character Window under Window > Character.

Step 8

Duplicate this Layer with Command/Ctrl + (J), right-click on the Layer’s thumbnail and choose ‘Clear Layer Style’. This way the text below matches exactly the one above, and now we can add more effects. My favorite way to work with 2 Layer Styles, is to create a solid base as we did to the first Text Layer, and then add lightings and reflections on the second Layer above. This way you can blend easier the lights and colors with the textures of the Layer below.

Step 9

Let’s go on, adding a Layer Style to this second ‘Othello’ Text Layer. Double click on its thumbnail to open the Layer Style panel. Set fill opacity to 0 in blending options.

Step 10

The effect is pretty much done, but we need to make it look crisp and realistic, in this final step. Take a look at the trick with the ‘Stroke’: dropping down it’s Opacity to ’0′ it works almost as a layer mask, hiding the Layer on its edges. A Stroke of 3px ‘Inside’, for example, will hide the Text for 3 px along the edges, revealing what’s below in that 3px range. Once you’ve finished with these settings, click Ok to apply the effect.

Conclusion

Remember that when you Save the final effect, as a jpg image for example, it may look different, sharper, and more defined overall.

Pretty Awesome. Would even be better if you could explain what each effect (and mixing of effects) does. Do you go around just trying different options, or do you know exactly what to do for this effect?

I know exactly what every option does, but experimenting and tweaking settings is necessary. Is something you achieve with experience. The tutorial is more synthetic than my original: in the introduction I was explaining that you need to activate only the options one by one, and that I like to create a basic texture Layer (the Text below) and apply lights effects with a Layer above (the text above) ;)

      • Pop Mircea

Thanks your your advice. I’ll try to do it with more layers and blending it. In teory I know what what every option does but when you blend togheter…you need imagination. Very nice tutorial, I parsed it step by step and mixing options. I’ve got some nice effects. Thank you very much!

    • http://is7s.com Catalin Cimpanu

      Giallo has explained it perfectly.
With experience comes this 6th sense of knowing exactly where to go in Photoshop and what to tweak to get the desired result. Had the same worries and questions as you have now. Practicing for 1-2 years will help you achieve this level of quality with no extra effort.

This text effect is crazy sexy. Well done.

This is fantastic. I know how to get around much of the interface, but when it comes to things like this i am lost. I appreciate this as it has expanded my memory banks of what is possible. How long have you been doing this?

A lot of time, but I see people with a lot of experience making the same craps over and over. Check out the Graphicriver marketplace, you will find amazing Layer Fx there.

      Thanks again

You know… usually graphic design professionals do believe that using layer styles is “the easy way”. That it is somehow overused and everybody can detect them because they don’t look natural.

And with this tutorial… well… you just proved everyone wrong ;) I mean, you CAN see the layer effects here, but it looks so natural that you can’t help thinking it must have painted details for the lights, or maybe an adjustment layer for the colours, or even some kind of filter to achieve that metal look. Then you find out this is just… layer styles. Only smart use of layer styles.

    Bravo.

      Thanks a lot Javiperillas.

In fact only a couple of people I met in the Graphicriver marketplace, like to push to the limit the Layer Styles. They’re incredibly powerful, metal and light effects can be reproduced realistically, is just a matter of the right settings, and you get that with experience.

I’m glad somebody noticed the hard work behind this, and frankly I hope Adobe will develope more the Layer Fx: actually they’re really hard to master, and sometime tweaking a blending option makes a huge difference. I’d like Adobe to take care of these tools and make them easier, beside the 3D wich is something actually too far away for PS.

These effects can be used for digital matte paint and web design, allowing you to save ton of time, and they’re scalable also.

Design a badge, or a beautiful type for a poster for example, and it must be wooden or metallic or on fire, so you matte paint it. Then the client says: “change the shape”, or “change the word”. And you need to redo everything: with Layer Styles you can edit faster your art, they’re just hard to control as they’re now.

  • Sincera

Giallo, thanks for this tutorial. I love the result. I do believe you didn’t mention you changed the color of the text in the second layer. Or did it just looked like you did?
But I just love the result and the process. It helps me understand what the different Layer Styles do and can do. And I agree with Javiperillas on the fact that this one look real. Most of these tutorials are great until you change the word. But you can make these settings work for different Letter Types as well.

Thanks for the work and effort to make this tutorial.

    • http://tinyurl.com/cx3w5e3 Giallo
      Author

Thanks Sincera: you can change the color text to whatever you want, the look won’t change because the color is given by the Layer Styles, in fact you can set the Fill Opacity to “0″ and the look won’t change at all.
Try to change the font, or to use it on Shape Vector Layers, the effect will be always nice. Another example with a different font here: http://pbs.twimg.com/media/A48lH7cCYAAdsMh.jpg:large

      • Sincera

Aha I see it now… And wow on that font it looks great as well. I tried it real quick on several fonts, just to see how it reacted and was surprised. Most times it doesn’t act well on different fonts or shapes. And I am just in love with the result of yours.

You must have spend a lot of time in this, Thanks!

  • Jay

Somehow on CS6 it looks different!! is it possible that with CS6 new stacking order of layer styles the effect renders differently?!

I’ve been having a play with layer styles myself and with plenty of messing around I’ve acheived some good if not basic results. Having just done this tutorial I can see that it will take a few more steps (and a lot of practice) to take things from looking good to looking great. I’m gonna be playing around with layers for ages now.

    Greetings from Cairo,

I have been using PS since version 4 (not CS4 :)). I love to learn new tricks.

I usually skip “beginner” level tutorials but I am so glad I followed this one.

The trick with the 0% Opacity stroke made my week!! Never knew it, and cannot believe I never ran into it by experimenting.

I have many layer styles that use 3, and sometimes 4, layers to get complex, realistic effects. You achieve a lot using 2 layers. I will be reading all your tutorials from now on.

Thank you very much for this great information.

After STEP 8 did you change the color of the font? Mine was originally black (I thought yours also?) And somehow yours looks white after…and simething wrong happens after that step for me…the word has a harsh line in the middle:( Maybe I’ve done something wrong, I’ll go through it again…
Thanks for the tutorial, found out a lot about the blending options:))

  • Kerry

I really enjoyed this tutorial. I added an image of the Excalibur to make a really nice desktop wallpaper with a personal touch. Mine did not turn out exactly the same because I had a little trouble figuring out the transition between step 5 and step 6. Your example goes from a black filled text to what appears to be transparent with the application of the gradient stroke without explanation. This time I did step 6 then followed that by changing the text layer from “Normal” to “Lighter Color”. That seems to have made my preview in the Layer Style match yours. We will see where that takes me.

  • GoZ

    Hi Gallio,

Thank you for this wonderfull turorial. I finish my studies of graphic design, and i am trying to improve my skills for my work. I would like to know if when you handle this technique,to make effect on typographie, you have to know all the effect, or if you make different try. I am trying to understand the way to handle all the layer style, not just to remake your tutorial. I hope you’ll understand my question, sorry for this bad English.

    Bye!

What a sweet demo of layer styles that makes a very flexible metal effect. I’ve been using Photoshop a long time but mostly self taught and never taken styles to this impressive level. Most enlightening for me is overlaying the styles of a second layer set to zero fill opacity and the way the zero opacity stroke knocks out the edge to reveal whats under it. Really outstanding. Thanks!

  • Seraphyx

For anyone following this step by step, when you get to step 6 and start adding effects to the text, make sure you change fill opacity to 0 to remove the text color and get it transparent.

Aside from that, very very cool font choice and layer effects to go with it. Probably the best I have seen to be honest. I’m very impressed.
