In the past, Photoshop did not do a very good job of applying strokes to objects. Applying a dashed line to an object in Photoshop CS5, for instance, could take you about 20 minutes and required quite a few steps. In Photoshop CS6, however, the Photoshop team has simplified the process. In this episode of our Introduction to Photoshop CS6 series we will explain how to quickly apply strokes to your objects using these new features. Let’s take a look!

Useful stroke tools! It’s about time. :)

  • Laci

Really, have to rasterize the type to add the new way stroke? Really? 2012, CS6? This worked so long? Ok, I know, there are still the stroke layer style, and I able to use both, but this is shame, I think.

    • Atroxide

You would think they would of added all these new stroke features to the stroke panel of the layer effects too…. kind of weird that they didn’t.

    • kdevs

He didn’t rasterize the type layer. He made it into a smart object. Completely different layer. To change the type, all you have to is double click on the thumbnail to edit the text.

Finally! Really important improvement, save some time, I’ve missed it.

Yeah it’s a bit disappointing that we have to wait until CS6 to have this ‘feature’ (in quotes only because this seems more like a bug fix disguised as an improvement) but I’m excited for it nonetheless.

On a side note… what was that awful, awful beeping noise in the first half of the video?

    • Chris

I agree. I’ve always hated the stroke “feature” in photoshop. It’s really no good at all if you want to do anything other than a 1px border.

At least CS6 has more actual new features than 5.5 did

  • Orey

I wonder if these strokes can be applied to raster layers. Hmm. Great addition though!

  • Juanjo Vargas

This Photoshop is more like Illustrator with vector shapes… very very useful, thanks Adobe, and thanks for the tut!

This photo is best for background any picture.

  • Aparokshith

Yeah, Photoshop CS6 has really good features for all designers. I found it very useful and easy now for web designing projects.

  • Earl

Or more accurately, “Finally Add Strokes [To Shapes] Without Layer Styles in Photoshop CS6.” A nice feature, but unfortunately these strokes are not as clean as drawing a border yourself or, aside from the corner issue, applying a Stroke style.

I get audio for these tutorials, but no visual!
