Are you new to Photoshop? Have you been trying to teach yourself the basics of Photoshop but have found the amount of educational material available on the net a bit overwhelming? As the world’s #1 Photoshop site, we’ve published a lot of tutorials. So many, in fact, that we understand how overwhelming our site may be to those of you who may be brand new to Photoshop. This tutorial is part of a 25-part video series demonstrating everything you will need to know to start working in Photoshop.

Photoshop Basix, by Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor, Martin Perhiniak includes 25 short video tutorials, around 5 – 10 minutes in length that will teach you all the fundamentals of working with Photoshop. Today’s tutorial, Part 7: Blending is Fun will explain how to get to grips with layer blend modes. Let’s get started!

  • http://psd.tutsplus.com/tutorials/icon-design/create-a-cute-twitter-bird-icon-in-photoshop/ hi

I really have a burning question. It’s not about this, but about something else. I’m posting it here cause I hope I’ll get a reply. The thing is that I’ve been doing a few tutorials recently and I’m new to photoshop. What I don’t understand is that my circles and other objects created with the ellipse tool don’t turn out as smooth as in the tutorials. Like this twitter bird tutorial I’m doing. The shapes are rounded in the tutorial, but on mine they’re a bit edgy, if you know what I mean. I’m using CS3, if that has anything to do with it. Also, most of the time when I make shapes with the ellipse tool I choose “Shape layers” so that the color automatically fills in the shape. Could that be the problem? I’d really be happy for a response! Thanks in advance!

PS I linked the above mentioned tutorial to my name just in case you want to see what I mean.

      Hi,

It is difficult to find out the problem without seeing it on your machine but if you send me an email with an attached image example that you made I would probably be able to find the problem.

Without seeing it I would say it is a problem with the size of the document. Try to use larger pixel dimensions.

When making your shapes (circles, for example)… are you using the ellipse tool or the eliptical marquee?

      • http://www.yesimadesigner.com Martin Perhiniak
        Author

The marquee is for making selections mainly, so for anything else it is better to use the Ellipse Shape tool.

    • Thomas

Sounds like an anti aliasing issue.
This happens when you’re either not 100% zoomed in or there’s an issue with your graphics card.
Try turning off openGL drawing in the settings.

  • Trevor

Very nice one again, easy to follow and very informative.

  • Andre Nathan

your sound is extremely clear, even english is not my main language, i can 100% understand it, thanks

but at the last picture, are u just use brush, blend mode play and the sketch???

btw, why you don’t upload your tuts on youtube, youtube’s buffer speed is better than this one at my place

I downloaded the source file….may i know where should i put it?

  • Alec

    Awesome tutorial! Thanks so much!

Just one question: where did you get the textures which we blend with the picture? I’ve got them because I downloaded the source files, but I’d still like to know: where did you get them? The one which fills the whole picture is really great, I’d like to know please :)

    Thanks!

  • Débora

Oh my god, these tutorials are becoming really exciting to me! haha First I caught myself answering out loud “multiply” and enjoying it when he said I got the right anser. Then, when he showed his final painting, I was literally awed and then thought ‘well, of course he laughs, look at this!’. haha Great. I’m still not believing you’re uploading the files also, Martin.
    Thankyou for sharing all this.

p.s.: my ‘thankyou’ is underlined as wrong. I really thought it was a whole word; is it separated?

    • Débora

Ok, I came up with a question. I tested real quick the different blending modes and understood most of them, even because it’s divided into groups in the list according to the effect it’ll apply, right? I mean, the darks together, the lights together, the overlapping types together.
Well, I didn’t really get the Dissolve mode, and why it is ‘grouped’ with Normal. Plus, if anyone could explain the main logic behind the last two groups, I would be really thankful!!
      =)

  • FS

Thanks a lot.. your tutorials are very helpful ^ ^

  • Dovechick

Very helpful tutorial thanks… I hope that one day there may be some crib cards attached to these tuts. It takes me time to assimilate all this stuff and it would make it easier to have a reference at my elbow when I am working on something,

Hi…I am learning Phtotoshop for the very first time. I have a very silly questions. How do I get the negative filmstrip layer and the other materials you used…abstract etc…do I download these or are they already in a panel?

Are there any tutorials that can give me step by step instructions? I am all googled out without much help. I learn better at watching than reading.

It took me a while to figure out the layers tutorial…I am like a baby just learning how to creep.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Rachael

I found the filmstrip and I am figuring out how to get the other materials. Thanks anyway!
