Are you new to Photoshop? Have you been trying to teach yourself the basics of Photoshop but have found the amount of educational material available on the net a bit overwhelming? As the world’s #1 Photoshop site, we’ve published a lot of tutorials. So many, in fact, that we understand how overwhelming our site may be to those of you who may be brand new to Photoshop. This tutorial is part of a 25-part video series demonstrating everything you will need to know to start working in Photoshop.

Photoshop Basix, by Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor, Martin Perhiniak includes 25 short video tutorials, around 5 – 10 minutes in length that will teach you all the fundamentals of working with Photoshop. Today’s tutorial, Part 10: Start Using the Brush Tool will explain a little about brush diameter, hardness, opacity, the brush panel, how to save a custom brush, and work with a tablet. Let’s get started!

  • Dylan Roberson

I am amazed at how much I learn from these series even after spending 5 years with Photoshop. This is the best tutorial series ever, and Martin always explains them so well. Great job!

  • rospiz

    very useful thanks…

  • Spreng

Hi Martin. Can you tell me what brand, modal, and size of the tablet your using? I’m looking at different tablets, but I don’t know which is best for the money.

      Hi Spreng,

      I have two tablets:

      1. Wacom Intuos4 Medium size
      2. Wacom Cintiq 21UX

I use the first one most of the time, because I need to travel and it is easy to move around. I love it and it gives me everything I need for my professional work. I even made digital paintings with it, like this one:

The Cintiq is a dream tablet still for me and I love working on it, but that one is big and I can only use it when I’m working at home. Most of the times I use it when I have time to make digital paintings – which is unfortunately very rare.

I think the best option is the Intuos4 but you can also try the Bamboo tablet, which is also great for a first tablet. Maybe after a year or two you will feel the need for an Intuos, but the Bamboo is also a great quality tablet. I used to work with one for a year.

I hope this helps to choose!

I saw that painting on deviant art, it’s awesome. It clearly reminded me of an Hindu Goddess called “Mahishasura Mardhini” (i.e. one who killed the evil Mahishasura) or ” chamundeshwari”. She even carries the trident, very similar to your painting, but for the *sexy* looks you have created. You are very talented!

Martin, I just wanted to tell you that I’ve watched the first 10 of these tutorials now and being a beginner, these are absolutely invaluable! I’ve learned so much already, I feel like I can function in this tool, at least. I can’t wait to put this knowledge to work!

I am wondering now that I am on number 10 of 14, but the description says there are 25… are the other 11 still in the works? Sorry, I don’t see how to tell when these were posted. Anyway, brilliant work, and thank you so much for taking the time!

Is there a place somewhere that someone could send you a donation for your time?

  • Alec

Great tutorial! I’m really enjoying the basix tutorials in psdtuts+, awesome job Martin Perhiniack!

I do have just a few questions (I use a PC if that changes something):
-First, when I Ctrl+Alt+RightClick, I can change the size and hardness but I can’t see if I’m changing the hardness or not because it just stays white inside: it doesn’t put blue colour or black like in your video (I have put a colour in my foreground colour), is there a setting I need to chose?
-Second, are shape dynamics ONLY for tablets? Is there no way to use them on the computer?
-Third, how do you delete all the brushes we made in the layer if the background color is not white? I use Ctrl+A and then Ctrl+X with a white background, but if I use this with a color or black on the background, the whole layer becomes the background color. I want only white on the layer, how do you do it at 3:16?

    Thanks so much!

    Alec.

  • amina

  • http://ashitvora.com Ashit Vora

Where do I get the source files for the rest of these tutorials?

    • http://psd.tutsplus.com/ Grant Friedman

Unfortunately, there aren’t any source files available for this series.

      • marcob

On the previous four of five lessons there is a link to download the files for those lessons. Is there a reason that you stopped putting the files for download available?

      • http://psd.tutsplus.com/ Grant Friedman

We just felt that it wasn’t necessary to include all the source files for this series after we got a bit deeper into it. Is there a particular file that you wanted to look at?

      • marcob

There wasn’t a particular one I wanted. I just felt it was very helpful to be able to go along with the same files and copying what he was doing.
