Are you new to Photoshop? Have you been trying to teach yourself the basics of Photoshop but have found the amount of educational material available on the net a bit overwhelming? As the world’s #1 Photoshop site, we’ve published a lot of tutorials. So many, in fact, that we understand how overwhelming our site may be to those of you who may be brand new to Photoshop. This tutorial is part of a 25-part video series demonstrating everything you will need to know to start working in Photoshop.

Photoshop Basix, by Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor, Martin Perhiniak includes 25 short video tutorials, around 5 – 10 minutes in length that will teach you all the fundamentals of working with Photoshop. Today’s tutorial, Part 16: A Clone Stamp Tool for Everyone will explain a little about retouching images and cloning non-destructively and wisely. Let’s get started!

  • http://www.logandesigns.co.uk Mark

Probably my favourite tool when I first started out because I could do things that I’d only dreamt of in MS Paint!

  • http://www.slimtrain.com/ slimtrain

why kick a puppy, so cruel

    • George

Yeah, you’re right. Your head should have been there instead…idiot.

    • Puppy Kicker

Kicking puppies are fun. You should try it out someday!

  • edwinhollen

Ha! Coolest final product on psdtuts in a while! Great work.

However, there are some obvious cutout leftovers around the dog, but otherwise it looks super!

  • R083r7

    Hey, that’s no fun!

  • http://www.monsterbox.com.br PH

I love his accent! haha! :D

    Another good one, Martin.

For areas that have a well defined pattern, or regular repeating shapes that need to be duplicated over an undesirable object in an image, most often i’ll resort to one of the marquee tools: select the shape of what i wish to cover over plus 20 pixels or so around it, move the selection into the area that i need to duplicate, copy/paste and move that new layer over the undesirable object. If necessary then I can remove excess from the new layer with a mask. This usually gives a cleaner appearance than the clone stamp tool, and is quicker to boot. Not that the clone stamp dosn’t have it’s uses, but I’ve long since put it away in favor of better things when it comes to retouching large parts of an image.

  • Trevor

Well done again, keep them coming.

  • http://www.byrenata.com.br Renata

it´s wonderfull the process but please… dont do more images like that.
No violence with animals in place put a stone.

    • unadventurer

      oh, please. grow up.

  • Lyndon

I love animals and have two full blooded German Shepherds and I must say for some reason I wanna see the little doggy launch :P

Some might say that’s cruel, but that’s only where your imagination carries you. People grow up, it’s only photoshop fun :D

    Cool final product ;)

  • Mikey

Another hint for those who have CS3, lining up edges just use caps lock when finding the edge, this gives the clone tool a nice cross-hair to find the points to start from. :)

I’m new in Photoshop, and I find your Basic series extremely helpful. I’m now able to follow other “intermediate” tutorials on Tutsplus. Thanks!

  • Rensa

    LOL, great humor man :P

  • http://www.webninjawannabe.com Ven Francis | Web Ninja Wannabe

haha poor lad he gotta fly! :P

  • http://masterable.net Ted

This is no good for psdtuts+, I would expect more. There are obvious lines around the dog and if you look at the environment and at the dog you can see lights and shadows are facing different angels, also there is way too much shadow under the dog. Not even mentioning that football player would miss the dog. (so much fail)

nice tutorial, helping me as beginner

  • Jen

Honestly, a dog? Grow up and find something different other than a dog. I can overlook a lot of things but for some reason this really bothers me. Perhaps, it is because I work in a field where I see dogs kicked, abused, killed, shot, run-over, buried in snow alive etc… Show some class. You can provide the same tutorial (which isn’t necessarily that good to begin with) without suggesting inappropriate situations.

I’d have to disagree with your comment about the tutorial not being good. I found it to be excellent. I’ve used the clone tool numerous times and watching this will made me find ways to use it more effectively.

As far as the dog, it’s just one image transposed over another. Any act you see committed other than what is shown is where your imagination takes it.

    tasteless…

  • endo

Very interesting and helpful tutorial. Thank you! I am looking forward to your next tutorials.

  • Nik

It’s just a tutorial people, nothing was harmed here! I’m a beginner and if it wasn’t for psdtuts I would still be back where I was before I found them, if they want to use a dog, what’s the big deal, it’s just for fun, if you don’t like it, don’t look at it. Thanks Martin.

Thanks a lot Nik and everyone else who follows my tutorials! I didn’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings with this image. On the picture the football player is a long time friend of mine and we both love dogs and animals in general. I understand that some of you don’t find it funny and I probably watched too much Monty Python, but please don’t take it as an insult. It is just a joke, and it shows well how efficient the Clone Stamp tool can be. With one brush stroke you can completely change the meaning of a photograph. It is a provocative example, but there are much more offensive advertisement out there in the recent years. I apologise again for everyone who found this too morbid and I hope you can still focus on the techniques discussed in the tutorial.

      Martin

  • Ilan

    Good job!

    Thanks Martin!

    Koszonom szepen!

    Waiting for your next tutorial.

  • Queggles

There are those days where some people just feel like kicking a puppy. D:

  • PRATEEK GUPTA

its great man easy & nice

  • http://www.pluspurple.com Cambridge

Still on CS3 but looks like I need to upgrade soon. Love the idea of the clone aligning tool. Thanks for the post.

  • Frost

Thanks Martin, I’m new to Photoshop and I don’t know what I would do without your tutorials:) this was another great one, at last I know how to use the clone stamp tool efficiently:)

And the puppy part was fun:D Come on, people, be simpler, we all love animals and this is just a photo=)))

  • Mustafiz

awesome work… learnt lot from you..

  • George

Clean up the final result. Just because you are featuring the clone stamp tool doesn’t mean you can’t use other tools to make the dog look like it is part of the piece. Adjust the lighting, make the shadow better, etc. Small adjustments go a long way.

    • http://none Mask

I disagree, the purpose of this tutorial was to teach about the clone stamp tool, and he succeeded in doing that. Adding other steps is just unnecessary, would make the video longer, and just confuse the viewers.

That’s what I like about Martins tutorials, he goes right to the point, and keeps it nice and simple.
