Filters are a powerful tool in Photoshop to help you apply quick effects to your images. The Oil Paint filter in Photoshop CS6 will give any image a painted look. In this tutorial, we will introduce you to this new filter. Let’s get started!

LOL this is a joke right? A 26 second completely pointless movie.

Hey here’s an idea for you: Instead of just telling people how to click on Oil Paint; why don’t you go through all the adjustable settings and explain their meanings? This is NOT a tutorial. Frankly it is insulting to the readers.

    • mohamed

he said this is not in-depth tut JUST an introduction

      • Sharpie

Its not even that. Telling us that the filter exists and which menu to click on is nothing more than a waste of time for a video. That could have been said in a single sentence. A video should go over the settings and explore filter with examples.

I appreciate your feedback. This video was just an introduction. I could have gone through all the settings and explained exactly what each one does but I felt that the options were fairly straightforward and didn’t need much explanation. If you find this video insulting, I apologize. Just keep in mind that this series is meant for users who want a quick introduction to the new features in Photoshop CS6. As with everything else, we certainly plan to explain these features in more detail, at a later date; and of course, apply these tools to more advanced effects later on.

Doesnt matter filters = rookie… this tutorial is just going to show 12 year olds who pirate the adobe software how to do something new so they continue using the filters and making their profile pictures or making youtube “tutorial”
        videos….

and you could have gone in depth its a preset filter with sliders not much you can really teach there bud,,,, doesnt take any skill sorry.

      • Vincent

Grant I’d like to give a more constructive response. I do agree with other commentors that honestly, this video is not helpful. Simply informing us that there is a new feature in existence is not what I would call a tutorial, or even a post suitable for this site. If this video was put up by a random person on youtube I wouldnt even find it quality.

What you should do is go into the specifics – explain what the sliders do. Obviously for something like “angle” for example that is self-explanatory, but the actual effects of other sliders might not be immediately noticeable or understood.

You could also give tips like which sliders seem to be most helpful, and maybe something along the lines of suggesting which you think could create useful effects, like for example with specific settings maybe its possible to create a shine effect similar to how a heavy gaussian blur does as an alternative method.

Of course these are all hypothetical suggestions, but more research into the tool on your part will yield more info to the viewer. For a “tip” like this either do a full in-depth guide or dont do one at all. As a blogger I know that this probably took about an hour to put together by the time you got a stock image, recorded a video, saved/converted and uploaded it, wrote some words to go along with it, formatted your blog post, and posted it. For the viewer it also means watching a 40 second video, pausing whatever else they are watching, and giving their attention for that entire time. Keep in mind that it only takes me about twice that to look through parts of a 2-3 hour tutorial (like the one about creating a steering wheel and dashboard) and decide if I am interested in it.

Writing a tweet that says “In CS6 there is now a Oil paint filter! Check it out under the filter menu!” takes so much less effort for both parties and is more helpful.

I dont mean to be insulting, hopefully you find this helpful. I want to apologize for other commentors who just shit on this post with out and constructive feedback.

you are right just waste of time.

    • Kitty

It is not insulting to anyone but probably yourself. He is even mentioning it’s an introductory tutorial (and stated under the finished product as well) and if you read the description the difficulty is beginner and the estimated time is 30 seconds. That should have said enough alone for you to click out and find another tutorial to view.

  • Sigilist

I’ve been using the old Pixel Blender plugin for years in CS5+ [http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/pixelbenderplugin/?PID=2159997], so I was interested in seeing if there were any improvements and/or changes in CS6′s native filter….

    I’m still waiting…

    • Sigilist

And… let’s get over ourselves with these stupid video wastes of time. Just write and actual article people and can re-reference with trying to re-pan through a video over and over to find that one setting that’s needed.

I agree. This makes me want to cancel my premium membership here. Im beginning to think anything Envato is to stay away from.

That’s a good point. A written tutorial might have been a better fit.

Creative & very effective background design.

  • Trevor

This gets the prize for being the worst tutorial that I have seen, congratulations!

  • Mats

I dont want to offend the creator of this tutorial but seriously?? You should remove this video tutorial.

No offense taken. This tutorial is meant to be seen as a part of the entire Introduction to Photoshop CS6 series. I agree, that it looks weak on it’s own but it is a new feature of Photoshop CS6 and it deserves to be mentioned.

why does the thumbnail have different smudges than larger outcome? lol

    • http://psd.tutsplus.com/ Grant Friedman
      Author

I had to render a separate thumbnail for the preview as the larger image didn’t scale down very well.

  • Hater

Your introduction took allmost more time then the actuall tutorial.

Shame, i know why i dont subscribe to PSD TUTS anymore.

  • http://www.heymonkeydesign.com Lenny Terenzi

Good lord. Buncha whiners. It’s free, was labelled an introduction.

    • gartsman

There is a difference between whining and rightful complaining. Did you not complain about the Star Wars prequels when they were labeled as ‘Star Wars’ movies? This is in no way the fault of the guy that made the video, it’s Envato’s fault for failing to perform proper quality control.

How would you have made the tutorial better?

  • http://tinyurl.com/79ebr2g Amit

    creative and very effective background

  • Simon

Genuinely feel like this ‘introduction’ could have been put to better use and actually made useful. Terrible post, why doesn’t envato stop these useless posts from coming through? PSDTuts continues to get worse.. I can’t bring myself to subscribe if this is what has to be offered.

Jesus CHRIST you guys are mad in space

If you hate the example so much, don’t click it

I thought it was just what I needed. Honestly, i’m a complete noob and I’m thankful to have found this page.

  • vic

ty for this! thumbnail def caught my eye. i’ve been so in cs5 i didn’t even think about cs6. but i need this filter in a month!! gives me enough time to save up. and no need for extra exhaustive tests next week (at my expense)!! sweeeeet. keep up the good work!!

  • Phillip

I agree that the video was rather short, but I do appreciate him showing this feature. I haven’t used Photoshop since CS2, and I’m glad to see so much has been added.

If you want a “Paint look” – learn how to paint.
    This is photography.

      Thanks, that’s very helpful.
