Are you new to Photoshop? Have you been trying to teach yourself the basics of Photoshop but have found the amount of educational material available on the net a bit overwhelming? As the world’s #1 Photoshop site, we’ve published a lot of tutorials. So many, in fact, that we understand how overwhelming our site may be to those of you who may be brand new to Photoshop. This tutorial is part of a 25-part video series demonstrating everything you will need to know to start working in Photoshop.
Photoshop Basix, by Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor, Martin Perhiniak includes 25 short video tutorials, around 5 – 10 minutes in length that will teach you all the fundamentals of working with Photoshop. Today’s tutorial, Part 15: Taming of the Pen Tool will explain shape layers, making selections, and stroking a path with the pen tool. Let’s get started!
Thanks Martin its always the best 10 minutes of my time you cover many things and it is very
clear to me as with anything the pen tool requires practice and patience I didn’t know about the
symmetrical and asymmetrical that will surely save time :)
LOL i remember doing lessons like this back in school! Great fundamentals for aspiring digital illustrators!
I think if I’d already stroked / pathed a shape in order to mask an object, i’d just use the path itself as a vector mask, rather than make a raster / pixel mask out of a selection generated from the vector path.
Different strokes for different folks I guess. (see what I did there?)
I love this guy’s accent. He’s a great educator.
thanks for awsome tips….
First of all Martin thanks for your time and thanks to TutPlus for publishing it.
This is the first video on the series i’ve seen but i really much like it. Pen Tool was always been a mystery for me even though i use Photoshop for almost 10 years mostly for UI design.
Will follow your series from now on…
Once again a great Tut, many thanks.
I’ve been using Photoshop and Illustrator for a few years now and I never really got a very detailed breakdown of the Pen Tool like this. Learn something new every day!

Great tut – I didn’t know the symmetrical thing – very handy! Thank you!

Pen tool is best tool in photoshop, nice tutorial as well
Thank you very much for your tuts. They are really incredible. I couldn’t understand any tutorial i have ever read/saw but now… Now I am good in using pen tool, masks, etc. Once again thank you.
hi i just wanted to ask is masking only an availiable tool on CS4/5 or can it be used on CS3 aswell
I watched 3 screencasts now and they are just awesome. I understood everything, great Martin, keep it up please!
Why is it that during the last 3 days it happens that when you click on the tutoriaal video, you only get advertisements playing. Even yhough the screen showed Martins photo of the next tutorial.I was watching one video and after that when clicking on the next tutorial, only advertisement! Highly frustrating!!!!!!
Susan, the video plays just fine for me.
Thank you very much for this tutorial, i finally understand the Pen Tool. And I love your accent ;)
It will be great if you cud elaborate further on advance use of dynamic pen tool! Thanks…
Thank u so much….
