This tutorial is part of a 25-part video series demonstrating everything you will need to know to start working in Photoshop.

Photoshop Basix, by Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor, Martin Perhiniak includes 25 short video tutorials, around 5 – 10 minutes in length that will teach you all the fundamentals of working with Photoshop. Today’s tutorial, Part 19: Do I Need Sharpening or Should Wear Eyeglasses Instead? will explain the Sharpen tool, High Pass, Smart Sharpen, and Smart filter mask. Let’s get started!

  • David

thx man for another great and enlightening tutorial

  • Grammar Police

You should wear glasses so you can edit the title of the post.

    • neil bloodtitan

Too true, Grammar Police. I’ve often pointed out basics isn’t spelled with an x. Apparently it is spelled that way in Hungary, judging by the repeated appearance of the error. Perhaps he does need sharpening.

I’m sorry, but people as narrow minded as you are, should rethink if they want to or should be designers. Just think of how many slogans, product names, company names, advertisement texts or brief infos are out there with biiiiig grammar mistakes. But in most cases, like this one, it just feels, sounds and displays better like that.

And ’bout the tutorial – thx. :)

Neil, Basix is our brand for beginner level tutorials. It’s not a misspelling.

  • humayon

    this is awesome.

I have gone all the way through your tutorials and must say that although I have used photoshop for years I learned a lot. Especially the adjustments. This was a great one as well. Granted I was curious if you know how to really make HDR images in photoshop. I saw what you did and you said it was a trick to do it. But really getting a full HDR I am assuming involves using the camera.

Any resources or info would be awesome. Thanks for making this site awesome.

      Hi Brett,

I’m glad you found my tutorials useful. HDR photography is a really interesting topic. I would gladly make a tutorial about it. I asked the editor of the website and I am waiting for his reply.

      Thanks for the question!

Your wish came true, I’ve just finished the HDR tutorial. It will be published in June :)

Sharpening for the web is bit more cumbersome than that. You have to go through many different steps to achieve a nicely sharpened image like Flickr does. I wrote about it on my site. But for a high resolution photograph the one used in this tutorial, two steps does it about every time. Dfine plugin for photoshop, produces outstanding results as well.
