The new update to Photoshop CS6 adds smart object support for the Blur Gallery, as well as the Liquify Tool. This means you can now convert your layers to smart objects and then edit them non-destructively. In this tutorial, Martin Perhinak will explain.

How to Get This Update

To get this update, customers can follow the following instructions.

  1. In Photoshop, choose Help > Updates
  2. The Adobe Application Manager will launch. Select Adobe Photoshop or and choose “Update.”

Upgrade to Creative Cloud

Not using the Creative Cloud? You can subscribe to the Creative Cloud and get access to all these updates, as well as the rest of the Creative Suite for just $49.99/month.

Please help: I’m trying to practice these filters, BUT when I take my picture and convert the layer to a smart object, the options of Liquify and Blur Gallery get disabled. I also notice that this options are enabled when my layer isn’t a smart object (obviously I can’t see the tree of filters applied below the layer thumbnail). Totally opposite what I see in the video above.

    Thanks in advance.

      Hi Kevin,
This feature was part of the first Creative Cloud update called Photoshop CS6.1. Only subscribers to Creative Cloud can use this feature I’m afraid.

  • Ompopo

This update is only available for Creative Cloud members if I understand it correctly (not 100% sure), so if you bought a physical copy or digital download without the subscription you won’t get it.

  • Nobody

Is this update only for Mac? As it doesn’t say I have any updates for Photoshop.
