I've been "smart" with my techniques well before CS3 with 7. Using layer masks, duplicating the layer, and grouping objects you can basically do the same thing any smart object can give you. Any good designer I'm sure already knows how to use any smart technique already. Adobe should be focusing on bettering it's brush engine to be on par with Corel's and it's shape support, to at least be somewhat useful for illustrators (yes, you can use Illustrator but that's no where near Freehand). I don’t see the hype with “Smart” objects and filters.
