Are you new to Photoshop? Have you been trying to teach yourself the basics of Photoshop but have found the amount of educational material available on the net a bit overwhelming? As the world’s #1 Photoshop site, we’ve published a lot of tutorials. So many, in fact, that we understand how overwhelming our site may be to those of you who may be brand new to Photoshop. This tutorial is part of a 25-part video series demonstrating everything you will need to know to start working in Photoshop.

Photoshop Basix, by Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor, Martin Perhiniak includes 25 short video tutorials, around 5 – 10 minutes in length that will teach you all the fundamentals of working with Photoshop. Today’s tutorial, Part 11: Typography, the Art of Text will explain working with type layers, kerning, keyboard shortcuts, and resousse. Let’s get started!

  • Dustin

When I select my text layer, then choose 3D > Repousse > Text Layer.. , Photoshop CS5 tells me “This text layer must be rasterized before proceeding. Its text will no longer be editable. Rasterize the text?”

Why doesn’t that message show up for you?

      Hi Dustin,

I checked the “Don’t show this question again” when the warning turned up. I usually get rid of all warnings after I red them once. I don’t like being stopped by unnecessary things. I’m sorry that it confused you. To be able to create a 3D layer the text has to be rasterised.

Really basic stuff here, but great tutorial nonetheless. One quick tip, instead of hitting the “confirm” checkmark and/or command+enter to confirm your text, you can also use the Enter key by the number pad on your keyboard. It acts differently than the regular Enter [Return] key when working in Photoshop. It works this way with many of the other tools, also.

Once again, great tutorial. I’ve been using Photoshop for a while, and still I always enjoy learning new shortcuts (and yeay! I look forward to your views on masking) or ways to do what I’ve set to do.

One comment I do have though, is that the 3D text portion of the tutorial could have easily been replaced with a more interesting aspect of text – such as text on a path or a shape. I understand that that would require and introduction to using the pen tool, paths and shapes, and that some might consider it an “Illustrator” kind of task anyway, but I think it’s equally important to know how to do those things in Photoshop, and even though I am familiar with how to do it, I’m sure you could’ve shed some light and made things more understandable even for the likes for me :)

Anyway, Thanks for doing what you do, you’re great!

      • pappu

Thanks Grant for letting me know. Do you know when it will be published? Also, is there a schedule of when you will be publishing remaining videos? I remember reading somewhere that it’s a series of 25 videos.
        Thanks.

Thanks for this great tutorial. I’m new in Photoshop and for any reason the resize shortcut for the text (cmd + shift + , / .) doesn’t work.

Would be great, if somebody could help me.

    Many thanks.

  • Atanas Nikolov

Hi, i don’t know why i have this error when i click Reppouse: Could not complete the Text Layer command because the type uses a faux bold style. If someone know how to help me with this.. :)) He will be great!

    • http://www.yesimadesigner.com Martin Perhiniak
      Author

      Hi Atanas,

Faux bold means the selected font doesn’t have its own bold character set so Photoshop simulates bold from the regular characters. You need to turn off the bold option or choose a different font if you want to use the Repousse option.

      Good luck,
      Martin

Hi, guys. I from Russia and I love this web site. But I understand no much. All Russian Designers need this web site! Please, translate tutsplus.com and you see how much peoples visit this site!!

  • http://www.indexwebmarketing.com/services/referencement Jeremy Referencement

I get the same error of faux-bold style.

    What should I do?

  • mohamed omar

the shortcuts are for mac….what about pc

  • Lizel

Thank you so much! I now, Love you.. :)

  • Ale Dane

All those shortcut keys,it gets me confused…I think that you should have shown the panels for caracther and Paragraph, and explain the changes from there.Anyway thanks for the others great tutorials.

  • Cygnus

When I select the text layer and want it to transform in a 3D Object there is no Repousse.

If I go to Edit->Preferences->Performance in GPU Setting there is no video card detected and Enable OpenGL Draw can’t be checked.

How can I make photoshop detect my video card.I’m pretty sure that I have installed a VGA from Intel.

    PLEASE ,SOMEONE ..A SOLUTION!!

    Greetings,
    Alex
