Are you new to Photoshop? Have you been trying to teach yourself the basics of Photoshop but have found the amount of educational material available on the net a bit overwhelming? As the world’s #1 Photoshop site, we’ve published a lot of tutorials. So many, in fact, that we understand how overwhelming our site may be to those of you who may be brand new to Photoshop. This tutorial is part of a 25-part video series demonstrating everything you will need to know to start working in Photoshop.

Photoshop Basix, by Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor, Martin Perhiniak includes 25 short video tutorials, around 5 – 10 minutes in length that will teach you all the fundamentals of working with Photoshop. Today’s tutorial, Part 2: Bridge is Going to be Your Best Friend will teach you how to use Adobe Bridge to import images into one Photoshop document, process, preview, label, and keyword collections of images. Let’s get started!

I am not new to Photoshop but i must say i wasn’t curious to see how Bridge works … it seems useful! thanks

  • Trizarro

    where is part one?

  • Grim

I never really understood bridge, probably because I thought it wasn’t useful and I didn’t bother take the time trying to learn it, but because of this video, it might become a part of my work flow. Thanks for the vid,

  • http://stinkehund.deviantart.com Gen

It’s not like Bridge isn’t useful, but there are better alternatives, both in terms of speed and ressource management. Even in terms of workflow, but that is more subjective.
Other programs may not integrate in Adobe products as “flawlessly”, but they also won’t take ages to load and won’t eat up nearly as much memory.

  • http://www.designious.com/designcocktail/index.php Doink

I used Bridge a while back, it’s very good for organizing stuff, but ever since i try to create synergies between photoshop and other apps, i don’t use it that often. And that’s only from a technical aspect, it encumbers my computer. Once i upgrade my pc, i’ll get back to using it as before :)

  • Ed

why would you use bridge rather than Lightroom or Aperture?

  • http://www.vg.no Regine

In my class we all hate bridge, when it’s open at the same time as photoshop everything colapse with “windowns”.. It’s better with picasa, or something..

  • mr.eon

Your english needs improvement dude, but the tutorial is OK :)

    • http://tonyv125@deviantart.com TonyV125

      Ed,
For those who buy more than just Photoshop (purchase one of the creative suites), Bridge is included. Lightroom and Aperture would still have to be purchased. So in my case, it’s out of convenience, and I haven’t experienced any issues with Bridge CS5.

      mr.eon,
Even if your comment was only a joke, it really was uncalled for and served no purpose.

Perhaps Martin should have narrated in his native language. Perhaps you speak multiple languages fluently, but it still doesn’t warrant the comment.

I just don’t understand why so many readers of sites like these wish to post negative comments regarding FREE tutorials.

      Martin,
I’ve been using Photoshop since 3.0 and Bridge since CS3, and it’s still always helpful to see how others use these products. Moreover, quick videos like this one usually point out helpful tips faster than digging through online documentation, so thank you. Great job!

      • rk

Well said! People say mean things while hiding under their fake names. They should be grateful for folks that put time and energy to help others, for free at that!!!

  • http://www.yesimadesigner.com Martin Perhiniak
    Author

Thanks a lot TonyV125 for your answers! I’m glad there are readers like you :)

    Ed:
The main difference between Bridge and Lightroom/Aperture is that you not specifically use it for cataloging your photographs but for organising your graphic, photographic or any creative projects. It is a file management application, while Lightroom and Aperture is purely for cataloging and develop photographs. They serve similar yet different purpose.

    Regine:
If you use a computer with lower performance you should try to change Bridge’s preferences. You can turn off all the start-up scripts and lower the cache size first. You can also turn to software rendering if the preview panel seems to be rendering slowly.

    mr.eon:
I know my English is not perfect but I try my best. It would be helpful if you let me know, which are the main grammatical mistakes or bad pronunciations in the tutorial.

Thanks for the comments everyone, 4 days until the next part :)

    • http://ahmet.com.ba AhmeT

I noticed one mistake, nothing to crucial but it would be nice if you correct that.

When you want to say, for example, “we can use more than one image”, you say that object in its singular form. Your “version” sounds like this: “we can select more than one filters”, and instead of “filters” it should be “filter”. You also made that mistake when talking about selecting more than one image, where you also used plural form.

Except that, your introduction and approach to this is very good and I cant wait for new videos. :)

      • http://www.yesimadesigner.com Martin Perhiniak
        Author

Thanks a lot for that! I appreciate your help, my grammar definitely needs some polish :)

  • Gary

    Mr. Perhiniak,

Thanks for the first two installments. Your presentation is very well thought out and insightful. I liked the way you presented so much I felt compelled to sign up for a premium membership with tuts. Can’t wait for your next post.

PS – Where can I find other educational presentations from you on this site or others?

  • Ragesh

    Hi,

    It is really wonderful ….

  • mr.eon

I think you should stick to the topic and not criticizing other users’ comments. There was nothing negative in my comment! Marton really needs to improve his language skills if he wants to make better tutorials in English. ( just as I need to improve my Photoshop skills :)

    • rk

If your primary grouse is Martin’s language skills instead of photo shop content, you should go elsewhere. Sorry but you sound stubborn and arrogant to criticize someone that took much pain to create this video in a language that’s not even his mother tongue. That takes guts to begin with. The least readers can do is to appreciate his efforts and point out only content related mistakes if any! FYI..I speak 6 languages fluently but find it unnecessary to pick on Martin’s English (which is not bad at all!).

      • wren a

your tutorials are very helpful and easy to follow/understand, even for me with a learning disability…so glad i have found your psd tutorials~! thankyou Martin~! and am looking forward to learning of my photoshop with you~thanks again~!
        wren a.
        {/:))

  • Karen

Thank you very much Mr. Perhiniak for the tutorials! i’m now looking forward to more of your tutorials in this series. I’m new to photoshop and your videos are very helpful to me. God bless and keep up the good work!

  • Shiva

Martin, I had been using Photoshop for a fair while, but never felt the need for an application like Bridge. After watching the tutorial, I feel I had been shortsighted. Thanks for the wonderful effort.

Mr Eon, I was able to understand Martin’s English very well. If you are an English guru or Shakespeare’s great grandson and want to provide constructive criticism, take the time and effort to point out where Martin should improve in your opinion. As he said, he is open to positive feedback. Do not just vaguely say ‘improve your English.’ It is rude.

  • David

    Thanks for the tuts :)
Though I still prefer using Windows Explorer to browse my photos because Bridge is kinda slow and I am somehow not a fan of the way Bridge organise the photo.

Looking forward for your next tut!

  • Sam

Thanks for doing this series, is really helping me learn Photoshop. I just have a random question. Where were born? From your voice, I would guess Germany. Just curious.

    • http://www.yesimadesigner.com Martin Perhiniak
      Author

      Hey Sam,

Close guess, but it is difficult to find out. I’m Hungarian. Our accent is similar to Finnish, maybe also to German even though our language is completely different.

      Martin

      • Anna

(and @eon:)I know, right? I am afraid it is impossible for us to adapt UK/US accent. It took me one year until people were able to understand me for the first time. Quiet frustrating.
But hey, we articulate ideas of a particular field in a language that is not ours. Specific vocabulary. Specific boundaries. And while speaking, we are two words ahead, constantly analyzing our upcoming sentences to correct mistakes before they were spoken. Let’s say, we multitask in a second language. Do that after us.

  • Robert

A great video tutorial, thank you very much. I’ve picked up plenty of good information for myself here.

I’m English and undertstood every word. Never mind “Eon”. He must be a bit simple and can’t listen properly.

  • http://www.provisionhouse.org Paul Stark

My wife is Brazilian. I wish my Portuguese was half as good as your English, Martin. I understand your tutorials completely, never a problem with comprehension (which is the important thing), and I am benefiting enormously from your teaching.

Thanks especially for emphasizing short-cuts, tips, and tricks along with functionality. Generous people like you giving freely of your expertise are a real blessing to people like me.

    • David M

      Agreed

  • neil

    Nice work, great tutorial.

Is there any way to eliminate the advertisement from the beginning? Perhaps moving it to the end for those interested in such things?

Oh, and goddamn that is a cute squirrel. He wants to be left alone though.

    • R

Kinda understand your issue with the ad, but hey! this is a free tutorial! It needs to be funded somehow. Go make yourself a cup of coffee while the ad is playing!
Thanks SO much for your work, Martin. I’ve been dabbling with PS for a few months now, but all self taught. This is a God-send.

  • Gabby

    thanks

  • rk

Mr. Perhiniak, thanks for the great tutorials! I am new to photoshop and yes, I was over whelmed by all the info out there on PS. Toughest part seems to be knowing which tool to use when i.e. I have a certain vision/image in my mind that I want to create with my photos but don’t know which tools to use or how to achieve the results I have in my head. I see great stuff out there that people have created but I don’t know which tools/techniques they used. Hoping that your video series will enlighten me along the way! If you have any other suggestions for total beginners like me, please share. Thanks for all the free stuff you put out there.

  • Charaf eddine

hi , realy good tutorial , thanks.

  • Débora

Great teacher and very good english as well! Well, what am I saying, that’s not even my first language…haha
Anyways, as much as I’m enjoying these basic tuts, the more I’m wondering where will I go when I reach the last one. Is there an ‘Intermediate Photoshop Tutorials’ series on this site? Or does anyone know another good one to recommend?? I, too, get hugely overwhelmed by the enormous number of information out there, to the point I get stuck in the same place not knowing which way to go.

    Thankyou for your time, Martin!

  • http://www.therealmusician.com Andrew

    Once again, another great tutorial!

When I first got my Master Collection, I had no clue what Bridge even was. I suppose it’s more like a glorified image viewer, but it does work really well.

I was especially impressed by your creative use of using the Magnifying glass to compare the two images, to see which seemed to have a higher resolution. Of course looking just at the KB size of a file isn’t really going to show if the image is sharper or not.

I really enjoyed this tutorial, and I can tell that every lesson you have to share is going to be useful.

Also, don’t listen to that fool about your English. I think you have really excellent English, and I prefer listening to someone with an accent.

I’m Canadian, and that I suppose would give me a slight “Canadian” accent, which really means I just say “Eh?” a lot more than any American (So not really an accent).

Anyways, I think your accent helps to keep the listener focused on the lesson. It forces us to try and listen a bit harder, making us take the information in better.

If it was just someone with the same accent as me, I could see my ears glazing over and I could miss pertinent information.

So the accent is an advantage! Don’t let anyone tell you anything different :D

    • http://www.yesimadesigner.com Martin Perhiniak
      Author

      Hey Andrew,

Thanks again for your comment. I really appreciate it! I’m glad you find my accent an advantage. I get that many times here on psd.tutsplus that they love my accent :) I guess that makes my tutorials unique and it works like some kind of “watermark”. Everyone can recognise my voice easily.

      Thanks again,
      Martin

  • satori

Amazing series, best teacher on photoshop I have ever heard. Relaxing, not jittery, not anxious. Just chill. And very very useful information. No fluff, just stuff that even intermediate/advanced people will learn from. Bridge tutorial? Who knew? And thank you. I would buy your video tutorial products in a heartbeat. Please make more series’

  • Dovechick

    Hi Martin,
Great instructional video and first class delivery. English is also my second language so I know how hard it is to overcome early learning. You English is perfectly fine and comprehensible. English is after all a universal language now with many differences in pronunciation and the quicker we get rid of expectations of how it should sound or be delivered the better to international relations.
Regarding the tutorials… is there any chance we could get a transcripts of them as ‘aide memoire’ for slow learners like me….?

  • Octavian

Oh my! So many thanks for this! It is so great!

  • http://techblogzone.com/ ben

I’m a complete novice when it comes to Photoshop. I’ve just watched your first two videos and already feel a little smarter. Most tutorials I’ve tried to follow before make the assumption that you already know the basics, which I don’t.

I’m looking forward to the next 27 tutorials and think you’ve put them together excellently.

  • http://tutorialsbd.weebly.com/ KHAN

    Fantastic job.
    Beginner’s will be helpful.

  • Hari

I didn’t use Bridge till watch this tutorial, when I prepare for ACE exam I saw some sample questions about bridge, that’s why I search ‘Bridge tutorials’, I like this tutorial so much, he( Martin Perhiniak) explain very well, Thanks alot Martin Perhiniak. you save my life, if not I really miss couple of questions in exam, Thanks again (I apologies about my English)

  • Carol Little

Thank you for the clear explanation. I will now start using bridge I am trying to learn to photograph birds and take multiple shots of one bird. Your tip on comparing two or more images to see the detail will make it much easier for me to select the best shot.

  • Faisal Josh

Thanks for sharing Martin very helpful tutorials …. :)

  • Maria

Thank you so much for the videos! They are very helpful.

  • Andrew Kramer

I’m already using Lightroom for my organization and just starting to get the hang of it isit a little redundant at this point to start using Bridge? and i know my question is years late
