Step 1

Create a new document with these settings like 1a. The first layer, call it “background” and fill any color. Then Open the Blending Options and settings (1b).

Step 2

Create a new folder, call it “ipod”. In this folder, create a new layer, call it “ipod” as well. Select the Rectangle Tool (U) to draw a rectangle shape like the one below (2a). Select the Pen Tool and click on the shape. After that, create four nodes of the shape as shown. At the top line, click to make a node between two top nodes. Then correct the top line of the curve by holding “Command” down, and clicking and dragging the node upward by a little (2b). Do the same with bottom line, but downward this time(2c). Then press Command + Enter to make the selection and fill that with color (2d).

Step 3

Open the Blending Options menu for “ipod” and adjust the settings like in image 3a. Create a new layer on top, call it “light ipod”. Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) to make a rectangle selection and fill it with white (3b). Then reduce the Opacity to 30% (3c).

Step 4

Create a new layer on top, call it “screen bg”. Use Round Rectangle (set Radius: 5px) to draw a shape like one below and fill it black color (4a). Then open Blending Option and setting (4b).

Step 5

Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to make the selection (5a). Press Command + J to duplicate this selection, rename the new layer “screen bg light”. Reduce the Opacity to 30% (5b). Then open the Blending Options and use the following settings (5c).

Step 6

Create a new layer on top, and call it “screen”. Use the same tool to make the rectangle selection right in the middle of the “screen bg” and fill it with black (6a). Then open Blending Options and use these settings (6b).

Step 7

Use the Polygon Lasso Tool to make the selection like in 7a. Press Command + J to duplicate this selection, rename the new layer “light screen”. Open Blending Options and use the specified settings (7b). Then reduce the Opacity to 30%.

Step 8

Create a new layer on top, call it “button bg”. Use Elliptical Marquee Tool to make the circle selection and fill it with white (8a). Then open Blending Options and use these settings (8b, 8c).

Step 9

Create a new layer over “button bg”, and call it “circle”. Use the same tool to make the smaller circle selection and fill it with white (9a). Then open Blending Options and copy these settings (9b, 9c). Add a button icon on “button bg” (9d).

Step 10

The right earphone is up next.

Create a new folder (outside “ipod” folder), call it “right earpiece”. Use the Elliptical Marquee Tool and the Pen Tool (P) to draw like in the steps below (10a). In turn, open the Blending Options of each layer and use these settings (10b, 10c, 10d).

Step 11

Create a new document (20 x 20px) with a transparent background. Choose the Custom Shape Tool, select the diagonal shape (11a). Draw and fill with black (11b). Then go to Edit > Define, name it “diagonal” and close this document (no need to save).

Step 12

Come back to the main document. Create a new layer under “right 03”, and call it “right 06”. While holding “Command” down click on the layer “right 03” to obtain its selection. Go to Select > Modify > Contract, put Contract by 2px. Go to Edit > Fill, at Contents select Pattern, at Custom select “diagonal”.

Step 13

The left earpiece.

Create a new folder (outside “right earpiece” folder) between “ipod” folder and “background”, call it “left earpiece”. Do the same steps of “right earpiece”.

Step 14

In the “left earpiece”, create a new layer on top, call it “shadow left” and according to the following images:

Step 15

Create a new layer under “left earpiece” folder, call it “line”. Use Pen Tool to draw like 15a. First, set Brush tool is hard brush 4px, black color. Then press U, click right mouse on the image, select Stroke Path to draw black line (15b). Open Blending Options this layer and setting (15c).

Step 16

Press Command + J to duplicate “line”, rename new layer “line shadow”. Move it under “line” and reduce Opacity to 40%. Then move this layer down a little.

Step 17

Create a new folder under “left earpiece” folder, call it “shadow”. Use Brush Tool, Pen Tool, and Elliptical Marquee Tool to draw accordin to the following images below:

And that’s it for this device! For a quick makeover, download the source file and apply your own colors and skins!

    Nice, thanks

  2. i want better tuts.. or psd plus.
I but another subscription for 3 months and I dont see my money here..

    • I don’t get you people. What do you expect to get on PSD tuts ? A recipy on how to turn a normal photo into a great fotomodel ? Or maybe a surreal landscape from pieces of photos ?

That’s kinda easy to create. The real difference about tutspus and other psd tutorial site is that they post basic tutorials along with advanced tutorials.

If you believe that you will become a great photoshop artist only from tutorials, you’re wrong. It takes a great deal of trial and error to be pro-efficient in photoshop. At least the tutorials show great ideas.

I like the plus tutorials, they’re great.

      • Justin says:

I think this is a great tutorial. It may take some time to actually re-create what is presented here, bit overall it’s a great tutorial and learning tool.

    • Silencio Dom says:

I Agree, you shouldn’t expect everything you’re looking for
where’s the creativity then?, these examples are great to open your ideas, not to think for you

    • dj says:

Why don’t you write your own?
I Mean, if you are already able in doing thinks like that (I’m not, so I need something like that), you can think in writing your Tuts and ask PsdTuts+ for a collab…

  3. piyanistll says:

woooww great working tnaks for post

  4. Faust says:

    Excellent, thanx!

  5. Liam says:

the texture on the headphones needs a lot more work.

  6. Richie says:

Nice tutorial. But another iPod? … c’mon guys, snap out of it …..

anyways… lot to learn from a designer’s perspective. Thanks

  7. Jimmy says:

Wow looks like a rip from the slodive tut done a couple of months ago.
    http://slodive.com/photoshop/create-a-realistic-video-ipod-nano-in-photoshop/

    • Margaret says:

It’s kinda done a little differently so I wouldn’t say its a rip off, really there are only so many ways to realistically render an iPod… I kinda like the other tut better with it’s use of a reference image etc.
Also agree about the texture in the earbuds. The pattern just needs to be tweaked a bit so that it’s seamless. not hard.
Aside from all that it’s a nice tut. Very clean.

    • Giuliano says:

Rip??? Please explain… If you are referring to the final image then yes, you are correct. They look similar but that’s probably because they are the same product!

  8. Leo Aslan says:

    It looks nice,
but it is just getting overwhelmed with the drawings of ipod, iphone, imac, mac pro…
I prefer some tuts which is more original

  9. OktayOe. says:

    Pretty nice !

Only thing that i dont like are the headphones, rest is pretty cool

  10. Majo says:

yes, nice tut for like 5 min. I like the glossy part of the ipod body but that shine on the display? If you are trying for realistic photo, you should learn something about lighting the scene. And texture of headphones is really bad. Need lot more experience before posting tuts!

  11. arcasa88 says:

Thanks, good tutorial but the blend options of step 10 are confuse

  12. AEVION says:

yeah, it looks great except for that earpiece texture

  13. Sean Smyth says:

    Thanks. Pretty nice tutorial

  14. miriam says:

    awesome i like it!

  15. matt says:

pretty poorly written tutorial. theres lots of skipped steps or just plain missing information in this one (in particular the section dealing with the headphones).

you guys need better quality control – i’ve found this is a common problem with a lot of the tutorials on tuts+. seems like someone submits a tutorial with a nice looking final product and you guys publish it without ever reading any of the steps involved to complete it. this doesnt make me want to fork over $9/month to read the paid content…

    • anthony says:

thank you I am stuckk on step five because I don’t know if I create the marquee tool on a layer or just make it. I can’t get it the same way in the tutorial. You have to have forgotten something in five. Can someone help me I hate leaving this unfinished I want to finish it???

  16. IamFace says:

    Wow very well done

  17. Hai says:
    Author

    Thanks for your cm :)

  18. Noppy says:

Nice, great to learn some tips

    Thanks

  19. Ryan says:

I decided to try it out using Illustrator:
    http://img268.yfrog.com/img268/8782/ipodtt.png

I couldn’t get the headphones looking right though so I left them out. :)

  20. Ryan says:

I thought this would be a cool vector so I tried it out in Illustrator:
    http://img268.yfrog.com/img268/8782/ipodtt.png

I couldn’t get the headphones looking right though so I left them out.

Now I’ll try to get it working in Flash. :)

  21. Spham says:

I wonder how many time this has been done ?
    Anw thanks.

  22. I think the only addition to this would be to add some texture with the Noise filter, apart from that it looks very slick. Well explained too!

  23. I like this tutorial. Very nice style!

  24. me says:

“My saying is: “If you don’t like it, don’t say it. Change it.” :)” <– I don't think that's a good idea, as nobody could improve his skills if nobody told what's necessary to do it.
That said: I like the tutorial a lot, but the metal pattern on the phones look awkward. put a little more effort in them;)

  25. max says:

It is really photorealistic (even if the headphones aren’t perfect), but if you’d have turned into a cool advertising with more creativity, it would have been an outstanding tutorial!

  26. ph says:

The pattern on the earphones is a little odd, but the rest is just great! Thanks! :D

  27. Rameexgfx says:

    Great Thanks for Share

  28. anggayasha says:

    nicely done.
    Thanks for sharing.

  29. remy says:

Great tutorial and thanks for sharing this technique.
But I have a concern on creating the earpiece, Step 10, for “right 02″, what is suppose to be the settings for the gradient overlay?

  30. Branden says:

Nice work Hai. Even if it is an older product, it is a great example of techniques on how to pull off an Apple product design. I think people need to take a chill pill and stop getting hurt over a design tutorial. If you don’t like it, then don’t do it; or like Hai mentions in his author bio — change it if you don’t like it.

  31. younes says:

    great !
thanks for sharing the tutorial .

    here’s the result :p

  32. younes says:

it’s from a reat IPOD picture xD

  33. Banguy says:

    Wow~ nice tut. Thax

  34. really great tutorials .. am trying out mostly all tutorials in your site .. thanks …

  35. Altair Júnior says:

Very cool tutorial, thanks for share !

  36. Taha says:

this is very great tutorial. Every day i see people complaining about the quality of tutorials. I think tutorials are for beginners. If any one have good knowledge about Photoshop or any other designing software than he should not be here. Instead they should create some better version of tutorial so any one can see the difference.

  37. fksd says:

thanks a lot. think it is very useful for me.

  38. Student aid says:

Ohhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! wanna wonderful nice collection of stylish it photo in photo shop.

  43. Shubhojit says:

Thanks for this photo realistic tutorial wish the ear phone part was explained more, anyway, I did that part my way. At least I learned about pattern definition in edit menu. Thanks a lot

  44. Dyno says:

Was there a reason for making selections and filling them with colours, instead of just making a vector shape pre filled with a colour.

    • Anthony says:

Why doesn’t it duplicate the selection with the marquee, I am stuck at that step?? I make the rectangle marquee and press command duplicate nothing happens.. How do I fill the rectangle marquee? can ? If you can help me I’d really appreciate it.. thanks

  45. beautiful tutorial, deserve for all social share to my friends.

  46. Toby Roberts says:
